3 Scofield Mining Disaster  Utah history textbook: “Utah’s worst mine disaster killed 246 people, including 61 Finnish immigrants and 20 boys. Some of the miners were killed by an explosion of coal dust inside the mine. In an adjoining mine, men heard an explosion and tried to rush out but instead met deadly carbon monoxide gas. It was a time of great mourning in the mining towns. In those days, the mining companies didn’t take responsibility for accidents or deaths but the company did pay for a set of new burial clothes, a coffin, $500 to each miners’ family. The disaster prompted a labor strike a following winter. Through the following years workers fought for more safety and workers compensation (money) when a miner was injured or killed.” p208

Name & Describe one:  Answer: Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism  During World War I, most of the war was fought in ______?  Answer: Trenches  How did World War I impact Utah?  Answer:  Utah residents planted victory gardens  They supported campaigns for “wheatless Mondays” and “meatless Tuesdays” so extra food could go to the war effort  Camp Williams in Lehi was designated as a training area for troops during the war

6 Roaring Twenties  Describe the Roaring Twenties in 3 words:  Answer: wealth, excess, and jazz  What were the hairstyles/ fashion of the 1920s?  Answer: Short bobbed hair & shorter dresses- flappers.  What was Utah like during the 1920s?  Answer: Much like the rest of the country, Utah experienced jazz, the prohibition, & flappers

7 Great Depression  What was the trigger/main cause of the Great Depression?  Answer: Stock Market Crash, Black Tuesday  What was the name of President Roosevelt’s plan to help the economy recover during the Great Depression?  Answer: New Deal  What was the name of the crop failures and famine caused by massive winds during the Great Depression?  Answer: Dust Bowl  How did the Great Depression impact Utah?  Answer: 1 in every 3 people in Utah were out of work during the Depression

8 World War II  How did World War II begin for the United States?  Answer: Bombing of Pearl Harbor  How was Utah influenced by World War II?  Answer: Remember your ABCS! A rmed Forces- 1000s of Utahans left their homes & fought in armed forces around the world B oot Camps & Bases- Utah was an ideal place for military training C ourageous Women in the Workforce- “Rosie the Riveters” helped war production D aily Rationing & Gardening- Utahans sacrificed food & supplies & planted victory gardens to help support the war  Who were the Navajo Code Talkers?  Answer: U.S. Marines who used the Navajo language as a secret code during World War II  Why were Japanese Americans sent to internment camps?  Answer: Fear that Japanese Americans were a threat to American home front safety after the bombing of Pearl Harbor

9 Nuclear Testing  How did nuclear testing impact Utahns health?  Answer: Downwinders- higher numbers of cancers, health problems  Who are downwinders? Answer: Individuals who were affected by radioactive contamination/ nuclear fallout due to nuclear testing
