3. What is Skin Cancer? –A disease in which cancerous cells develop from parts of the skin. It is also the most common type of cancer is the United States each year Types of Non-melanoma –Basal Cell Carcinomas They look like flat, pale areas or small, raised pink or red, translucent, shiny waxy areas that may bleed. –Squamous Cell Carcinomas They look like growing lumps, often with a rough, scaly, or crusted surface. 4. Treatment –Surgery There are many different types depending upon the stage and location of the cancer. –Radiation Therapy It is high-energy rays that kill or shrink cancer cells. It can come from outside the body or from radioactive materials placed directly in the tumor. –Photodynamic Therapy a two-step procedure that is done on an outpatient basis. –Patients are injected with a light-activated drug, which targets cancerous cells. About 24-48 hours later, a laser light is directed through a scope onto tumor cells, showing the cancerous tissue to a certain spectrum of light. Current Research –Immune- Priming This therapy is still in its infancy but has been shown to effectively attack foreign threats like viruses and also latch onto and attack skin cancers. –Other researchers are focusing on strenghthening the body’s own naturally produced “helper T cells”. They help identify and lock onto cancer cells and help guide the killer cells to the cancer. Researchers infused patients with about 5 billion of the helper T cells without any harsh drugs or chemotherapy. 7. I did my project on cancer because of the resent lost that I had. Even though she did not have skin cancer I did this anyway because it is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in the United States. My great-grandmother took her last breath on November 18, 2008 around 3 o’clock p.m. I saw everything that she went through fighting this disease and it really moved me knowing that there are thousands of cases similar to hers. Towards the end you could see the changes in her due to the cancer. It was as if it was not really her anymore, it was just a shell. Everyone misses her so much for she was the backbone of our family but I understand that she is in a much better place now. I love you Maw-Maw Jeanny and I will see you again someday!
