5 Two HIE Services Direct Secure Messaging (DSM): Secure, encrypted email service Free service No EHR required No special software required Patient Look-up and Delivery (PLU): Connects already existing HIE systems that meet specific requirements Allows users of HIE systems to obtain information on patients from other PLU participants

6 Investigate DSM Benefits Faster method of sending patient information to other providers than fax or courier “Read Receipt” ensures that the information sent was received Patient information remains secure and HIPAA compliant

7 Integration Into Current Workflow ReferralTransition of Care Response to a Request from another Provider A pediatrician sends an DSM referral message along with any necessary patient information and lab results to a urologist for treatment A urologist working with a children’s medical home sends a DSM message with an attached treatment summary to a hospital A pediatric nephrologist is seeing a patient and needs a more detailed history than the patient’s guardian can provide. In response to one request from the nephrologist, the pediatrician & urologist send patient history information via DSM messages instead of the multiple pages of paper fax that it would normally take.
