Producing OER’s for Criminology Student as Producer in Action!

Introduction Course and year Ambition Why we are here

SAP in practice: Applying Research Project Aims to make students aware of the major strategies of social science research, and allows students to develop some expertise and practice in using research tools and methodologies. Teaching of research methodology and skills can be challenging. Students can find the content tedious, and are fearful of any tasks involving statistical analysis.

OER Project Focus Highlighted key areas of the module that students felt could be improved. Liaised with peers to generate a clear understanding of what the OER project focus should be, taking into account our given time frame and resources.

Areas for Improvement Areas which could be realistically improved by the OER project and internal resources; Types of data and their uses Statistical testing and its relevance within social sciences SPSS breakdown and support of features

Embedding student as producer

OER and Student as Producer challenge to consumer culture?? Students to collaborate with academic staff in the production of knowledge from within, rather than judge it from the outside. Challenge to consuming ‘privileged’ course materials. Neary and Winn (2009) state that the student as producer, concentrates on the student’s intellectual development rather than their consumption of knowledge, which is then ‘beyond the logic of market economics’.

Student as Producer Identified procedures and sources from internet that students use to help construct assignments. Identified existence of informal help networks. Understanding of ideas from a student point of view. Understanding about how students work and how they access the materials that staff produce on blackboard. Enhance student confidence. Students learn about staff constraints and rationales. Great employability skills for students. Improve module.

Student as Producer problems Getting students to engage in projects. Students views: informed/valid or not? Are the students we are working with representative of students in general? Should some areas stay exclusive to staff/students ‘power’ issues…? (informal networks) Do all students learn the same… privileged students as producers?

Constructive Reflection Target wider student population when generating student feedback. Increase awareness of current open educational resources already available to students. Improve accessibility e.g. make programmes downloadable to phones, create mobile applications, improve links to relevant sites through Blackboard.
