4 Home Owners Loan Corporation * Provided gov’t loans to homeowners who faced foreclosure GOAL: To help families keep their homes

5 Emergency Banking Relief Act Bank Holidays mandated Authorized the Treasury Department to inspect banks Those that were sound could reopen. Those that couldn’t pay off their debts remained closed. GOAL: To restore the public’s confidence in banks

6 Securities and Exchange Commission Permanent Agency set up to monitor stock market activity and ensure that no fraud or insider trading was taking place Still around today to protect consumers from another stock market crash

7 Federal Emergency Relief Administration Provided direct relief for the needy (food, clothing) Created work relief programs GOAL: To provide basic needs of people hardest hit by the Depression

8 Agricultural Adjustment Act Paid farmers to lower production Gov’t wanted to reduce the supply of farm goods to raise prices GOAL: To raise prices of farm goods – which would raise farmers’ income

9 Social Security Administration Provided money to the elderly (retired persons), the unemployed, and the disabled Idea came from Dr. Francis Townsend Longest-lasting New Deal program

10 Glass-Steagall Banking Act Established the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation FDIC insured money in bank accounts GOAL: To restore the public’s confidence in the banks
