5 Legislative Update Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program- $380.4M - No summer funds available 2007 Florida Student Assistance Grant (FSAG) - $130.4M - Need based - Maximum award increased to $1,808 Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG) - $102.6M - Tuition assistance at non-public 4-year schools - Annual award $3,000

6 Florida Public Postsecondary Career Education Student Assistance Grant (FSAG-CE) Need based grant to students enrolled: In a public career center operated by a district school board or a community college In certificate programs of at least 450 clock hours or 15 credit hours At least half-time Maximum award $1,808 Legislative Update, continued New State Program

7 Florida Work Experience Program (FWEP) Need-based grant to students enrolled: In a public career center operated by a district school board, a community college, or a Department approved Educator Preparation Program In certificate programs of at least 450 clock hours or 15 credit hours At least half-time Legislative Update, continued Expanded State Program

8 Legislative Update, continued New State Program First Generation Matching Grant Program Expands from state universities, need-based grant program eligibility for students attending a community college. Student eligibility: Parents have not earned a baccalaureate degree Undergraduate, resident, full-time status Need determination Award amount up to the Cost of Attendance

9 Scholarships for Children/Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans Extends eligibility to children of eligible deceased or disabled veterans who are classified as POW or MIA, regardless of conflict Legislative Update, continued Expanded State Program

22 FFAA deadline BF application deadline is high school graduation Academic year is September 1 – August 31 All current year seniors graduated by August 31 FFAA closes on August 31 to BF applicants: No “Bright Futures” on FFAA results page No request from OSFA for transcript No move of transcript to production Bright Futures Scholarship Program Application Processes

23 Bright Futures Scholarship Program Early Admission Students Senior year – student is full-time admitted to a postsecondary early admission program Student submits FFAA at end of junior year HS submits transcript at end of junior year to same year as seniors All BF academic criteria met except coursework Cannot improve award during senior year Can get BF funding based on hours enrolled, if degree- seeking

24 Bright Futures - Foreign Language Dual Enrollment Courses Statewide Course Numbering System (SCNS) now identifies.5 and 1.0 credit foreign language courses by number on Comprehensive Course Table (CCT) No longer necessary to use the foreign language waiver for dual enrollment courses Still use foreign language waiver for: 1.0 credit Intermediate level course completed Appropriate CLEP or AP exam scores achieved

25 Bright Futures - Science Dual Enrollment Courses Comprehensive Course Table (CCT) reflects 8/2007 Dual Enrollment Equivalency List (found at www.FACTS.org) for 2008 graduateswww.FACTS.org Beginning with 2005-06 year – all dual enrollment science courses earn: 1.0 credit with corresponding lab.5 credit without corresponding lab Corresponding lab is now a lab with matched prefix: BSC1010 and BSCL045 = 1.0 Not BSC1010 and CHML046 =.5 Check CCT when advising students for any dual enrollment courses

26 Eligibility Lists OSFA displays for Postsecondary Institutions Master Eligibility List of all eligible Bright Futures, CSDDV, Byrd, José Martí, & Rosewood students New federal grants

27 Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) First and second year college students Pell grant recipients = Need-based Program Enrolled at a 2- or 4-year institution Degree-seeking, Full-time U.S. Citizens, (Eligible non-citizens NOT eligible) Florida Approved High School rigorous curriculum (does not require minimum GPA or test scores) FAS or FMS coursework, or Coursework similar to State Scholars Initiative (SSSI), or Two AP or IB passing courses with passing exam grades Eligible and Ineligible ACG files provided to Florida colleges ACG Award Amounts: 1st year:$ 750 2nd year:$1,300

28 Federal SMART Grant Third and fourth year college students Degree-seeking in designated program of study Computer Science, Engineering, Foreign Language, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Multidisciplinary Studies, Physical Sciences, Technology Pell Grant recipients = Need based Program Enrolled full-time at a 2- or 4-year institution U.S. Citizens (Eligible non-citizens NOT eligible) Awards determined at the student’s postsecondary institution Award Amounts 3rd year - $4,000 4th year - $4,000
