Thematic Session 2 Networked Media: State-of-the-art and IST Call 1 Objectives Skopje, 15 December 2006

IntroductionIntroduction Networked Media Numerous electronic devices are connected to a network, and media files are accessed from anywhere via the network Europe is well placed in the worldwide race to develop the networks and service infrastructures of the future.

Current Situation Centralized content creation in professional production houses Static AV delivery (prescheduled broadcasts) “Few to many” mode content delivery TV guide the most widespread tool for AV content search Creation Storage Adaptation Consumption

Technical Challenges (1) User centric content creation and consumption –Each device can be content source E.g. home appliances (sensor, IP camera, fridge) –(Mobile) multiview and content consumption Diversity in terms of –Types (encoding, formatting) –Quality Content adaptation –Seamless flow of content from one device to another –E.g. from PC, to STB (Set Top Box), to mobile phone Network infrastructure –Interoperable infrastructure for seamless multimedia networking

Technical Challenges (2) Content Annotation –Advanced and standardized metadata –Indexing, cataloguing Content Searching –Intelligent searching –E.g. using NLP (Natural Language Processing) Invisible technology –Limited user intervention

Networked Audiovisual Systems in FP6 Directorate D - Network and Communication Technologies

FP6 project case study: DANAE This STREP addresses the dynamic and distributed adaptation of scalable multimedia content in a context- aware environment, through –the definition of scalable formats with associated meta-data –their adaptation to the session context –the transport and delivery of multimedia content to the end- user Key areas include –MPEG 21 architecture –MPEG 4 scalable codecs –Data gathering from physical sensors http://danae.rd.francetelecom.com/

FP6 project case study: ESTIA The “Enhanced Networked Architecture for Personalised Provision of AV Content within the Home Environment” STREP aims at: –Residential gateway for local AV content management in seamless manner –Media trans-coding functions to allow content distribution to various terminals –Personalised access to AV content and white goods functions Key areas include –Residential gateway –Personalized services –Identity management http://www.ist-estia.org/

FP6 project case study: WCAM The “Wireless cameras and audio-visual seamless networking” aims to –Develop a wireless, seamless and secured end-to-end networked audio-visual system –Support the convergence between video surveillance and multimedia distribution over the Internet –Take into account real time aspects as well as security and scalability Key areas include –Scalable Video Coding –Automatic detection of event through scene analysis –Wireless networking
