1 Drill: Using the context of the sentence and images, predict the meaning of the underlined word. 1. Under certain circumstances the US government has the right to commandeer private property. 2. DEBRIS- what do you think it means based on the picture?

2 Objective I will determine or clarify the meaning of unknown words.
I will use consult references to determine or clarify precise word meanings, part of speech, and etymology.

3 Syllabus and Signature Sheet
Signature sheet due Tuesday. Don’t forget about the TYPED, FINAL DRAFT of your “Where I’m From” poem. Turn in rubric also.

4 Book Sign Out Keep these books at home all year.
You are responsible for replacing this book if it is lost.

5 Vocabulary Sign-up Each student will be responsible for 10 words in a vocabulary unit. Students will create a ppt. with 10 slides that include the word, part of speech, definition, picture, and sentence. You may not be presenting until later in the year, but you may begin working on this at any time. I will announce the due date for your unit at least one week in advance. You may use music, sound effects, transitions, etc in your slides. An example follows (will be uploaded on my website).

8 Admonish (v)- to caution or advise against something.
The librarian had to admonish the noisy students several times before they settled down.

9 Breach (n)- an opening; gap
Because of a serious breach of the rules, two players were ejected from the game.

Ancient caravans passing through desolate areas were sometimes attacked by brigands.

11 Circumspect (adj)- careful; cautious
It is important for a diplomat to behave in a manner that is both discreet and circumspect.

12 Commandeer (v)- to seize for military or official use.
Under certain circumstances the U.S. government has the right to commandeer private property.

13 Cumbersome (adj)- clumsy, hard to handle; slow-moving
The bus was filled to capacity with holiday shoppers carrying large and cumbersome packages.

14 Deadlock (n)- a standstill resulting from the opposition of two equal forces.
After fifteen innings, the score remained a frustrating 3-to-3 deadlock.

After the storm, the beach was littered with driftwood and other debris.

The scent of lilacs slowly diffused through the open window.

During the crisis the President found himself caught in a painful dilemma.

Too much stress and too little sleep will almost certainly muddle a person’s ability to concentrate.

20 Opinionated (adj)- stubborn and often unreasonable in holding to one’s ideas.
My boss is not too opinionated to listen to a reasonable proposal.

21 Perennial (adj)- lasting for a long time; persistent.
A garden of perennials is relatively easy to maintain.

22 Predispose (v) to incline to beforehand.
My genetic makeup seems to predispose me to colds and sore throats.

23 Relinquish (v)- to let go; give up.
A severe flu forced me to relinquish my role in the school play.

24 Salvage (v)- to save from fire or shipwreck.
Fortunately, we were able to salvage a few things from the fire.

25 Spasmodic (adj)- sudden and violent but brief; intermittent.
Spasmodic flashes of lightning and booming thunderclaps were accompanied by torrential rain.

26 Spurious (adj)- not genuine; not true.
Manufacturers who make spurious claims for their products may face fines or lawsuits.

27 Unbridled (adj)- uncontrolled; lacking in restraint.
Sometimes the unbridled enthusiasm of sports fans can get a little out of hand.

28 Summary/Closure One way to augment word choice scores in writing is to infuse sophisticated vocabulary in written work. Vocabulary study should NOT only consist of studying words for vocabulary quizzes but using these words to make sentences more descriptive.
