CONFIDENTIAL1 Good Afternoon! Today we will be learning about Add & subtract with like denominators Let’s warm up : 1) Convert 45% to Decimal. 2) Convert 35% to Fraction. 3) Convert to Percent. 3535 4) Convert 0.65 to Percent. 5) Convert to Decimal. 7575 1) 0.45 2)7 20 3) 60% 4) 65% 5) 1.40

CONFIDENTIAL2 Let’s review what we did in the last session We learnt the following terms: Fraction: is a number that names part of a whole or part of a group. The numerator (the top) is the PART, the denominator (the bottom) is the WHOLE. Decimal: A number that uses place value and a decimal point to show tenths, hundredths and the thousandths. Percent: is based on the number in terms of 100. "Percent" is actually "per cent", meaning "out of a hundred". Example: 1 = 0.25 = 25% 4 Fraction Decimal Percent

CONFIDENTIAL3 Review Converting Between Fraction to Decimal Divide the denominator into the numerator. STEP 1: Place a decimal point after the number inside the division "box" and attach as many zeros as necessary to handle the division. If the quotient does not come out evenly, follow any rounding instructions. STEP 2: STEP 3: ) 4 1.00 - 8 0.25 20 - 20 00 4 1 ) 1 = 0.25 4 Hence, the value. The given Fraction is 1 4

CONFIDENTIAL4 Review Converting Between Decimal to Percent Move the decimal point two places to the right. attach a percent sign. Multiply the decimal number by 100. STEP 1: STEP 2: 0.25 x 100 0.25 = 25% Hence, the value. The given decimal number is 0.25.
5
CONFIDENTIAL5 Review STEP 1: STEP 2: Converting Between Percent to Decimal Divide the percentage number by 100. Move the decimal point two places to the left. 25% = 0.25 ) 100 25 0.25 Hence, the value. The given Percentage is 25%.
6
CONFIDENTIAL6 Review Converting Between Percent to Fraction STEP 1: STEP 2: Place the number in the percent over 100. Reduce. 25% = 25 100 25% = 1 4 Hence, the value. The given Percentage is 25%.
7
CONFIDENTIAL7 Review Converting Between Fraction to Percent Multiply the fraction by 100. STEP 1: STEP 2: Reduce, and attach a percent sign. 1 x 100 4 1 = 25% 4 Hence, the value. The given Fraction is 1 4

CONFIDENTIAL8 Today we will see Add & subtract with like denominators COMMON DENOMINATOR : It is the same denominator shared by two or more fractions. Example: The fractions and have a common denominator. 3535 1515 SIMPLEST FORM : A fraction in which the numerator and denominator have no common factor greater than 1. Example: The fractions is in the simplest form. 3535

CONFIDENTIAL9 Adding Fractions with Like Denominators Like fractions are fractions with the same denominator. To add fractions with same denominator, follow the following steps: 1)When the denominators are the same add the numerators together. 2) Place the sum over the like denominator. 3) Reduce to lowest terms. That is: addend + addend = sum

CONFIDENTIAL10 Add fractions and. 3434 2424 We can show this with the help of model. 3434 2424 + Count the number total number of boxes that represent the denominator. Draw the model representing the sum. 5454 Hence, the sum is. 5454

CONFIDENTIAL11 Add fractions and. 3434 2424 We can show this on paper pencil. Add the numerators. STEP 1: STEP 2: Place the sum over the like denominator. STEP 3: Reduce to lowest terms. 3 + 2 4 3 + 2 4 5454

CONFIDENTIAL12 Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators To Subtract fractions with same denominator, follow the following steps: 1) When the denominators are the same subtract the subtrahend numerator from the minuend numerator. 2) Place the difference over the like denominator. 3) Reduce to lowest terms. That is: minuend - subtrahend = difference
13
CONFIDENTIAL13 Subtract fractions from. 1414 3434 We can show this with the help of model. 3434 1414 - Count the boxes and subtract the number of subtrahend boxes from the number of minuend boxes. Draw the model representing the sum. 2424 Hence, the sum is, that is, reduced to the lowest terms. 2424 1212
14
CONFIDENTIAL14 Subtract fractions from. 1414 3434 We can show this on paper pencil. Subtract the numerators. STEP 1: STEP 2: Place the sum over the like denominator. STEP 3: Reduce to lowest terms. 3 - 1 4 3 – 1 = 2 4 4 1212
