Weekly Sheet DO NOW 1)Translate to algebraic expression: Twice a number decreased by nine 2)2x² - 6(7) = 15, for x = 4 3) If 3-7a=3, a = Learning Goal/Objective SWBAT -Relate number line to coordinate plane -Find distance and absolute value between points Homework Complete coordinate plane map

Coordinate Plane Number line -> Coordinate plane X and Y axes Origin Unit Infinity Coordinate points Absolute value

What do we use a coordinate plane for?

Coordinate Plane Maps 3 locations (e.g. school, home, friend’s house) Labeled axes and origin (where you start from) Units-how far are you traveling-how many tics does it equal Show direction of travel Put symbols for landmarks and label coordinate points Show absolute value of distance traveled Add color, pictures, whatever else you’d like! If you didn’t have to travel on designated roads, is there a more direct way to get to from the origin to your last location? How would you do it? (answer on back of map)

Weekly Sheet DO NOW Describe the map you made yesterday/last night: what were your locations, how did you get from one to another, and what distance did you travel in all? Learning Goal/Objective SWBAT -Solve one step problems with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions combined Homework Continue working on maps-3 new locations from class

Operations with ALL types of numbers Put numbers into the same form: Both fractions Both decimals Both fractions or decimals 3/4 + 8  3/4 + 8/1 0.75 - 8  0.75 - 8.00 0.75 + 3/5  3/4 + 3/5 OR 0.75 + 0.60

With words… 1. Keanna has traveled 0.66 miles already. She has a quarter of a mile left to go. How many miles will she travel in all? 2. It is a 3/4 mile walk to school for Nick. If he has already gone.1 miles, how much distance does he still need to travel? 3. Tyshawn is traveling 1000 miles away to go to college. He is visiting his aunt on the way, who lives exactly half way between him and college. How far away does his aunt live?

With words… 4. If there are 32 students in Ms. Arwe’s class, and 3/5 of them are girls, how many boys are in the class? 5. Mr. Davis has 120 bags of chips and sells them at 75 cents per bag. If he sells 2/3 of the bags, how much money will he make?

Add to your map! Work on what you did not finish yesterday, then: Add a gas station that is 4.4 blocks (or whatever your unit) south and 1/3 block west from your origin position Add a food related business 9.2 blocks east of your second location Add another location (you choose what it is!) 3 ½ blocks northwest of your third location Draw a route that hits all 6 locations on your map. If you travel this entire route, what is your total distance traveled?

Weekly Sheet DO NOW-Answer 2 Qs: 1)How do we solve problems that combine decimals, fractions, and whole numbers? 2)How do you approach a word problem in math? (at least two sentences) Learning Goal/Objective SWBAT: -Model and solve real world problems involving whole numbers and fractions Homework Create 4 word problems involving fractions or decimals and solve them

Word Problems The average person uses 42 gallons of water per day. Of this amount, approximately 47% goes to flushing the toilet. If an average flush uses 4 gallons, how many flushes per person does this figure indicate? What we know: What we need: Key words: How we get there:

Word Problems If there are 32 students in Ms. Arwe’s class, and 3/5 of them are girls, how many boys are in the class? What we know: What we need: Key words: How we get there:

Poster Presentations 10 mins: Make poster with group of 4-5 people -Rewrite problem -Draw picture to represent it -Info that you know -Info you need -Key words -How you get there-ALL STEPS

Exit Slip A 64 ounce bottle of detergent costs $3.20. What is the cost per ounce of detergent? What we know: What we need: Key words: How we get there:

Weekly Sheet DO NOW If a 20 ounce bottle of soda costs $2.50, how much does it cost per ounce? Learning Goal/Objective SWBAT - Summarize solving word problems with operations between fractions and decimals Homework Enjoy the weekend and come back ready to learn on Monday!

Open Notebook Quiz 10 questions You may use your notes You may work with a partner (who you are sitting next to) If odd number of students-may have 1 group of 3 Use QUIET voices-only talk to your partner **HAND IN HW (map and word problems) and WEEKLY SHEET BEFORE YOU LEAVE TODAY!
