At the end of this lesson, you will:  Be able to identify the planets of our interstellar galaxy.  Be acquainted with factual information about space and the planets.  Develop an understanding of where we live and the space we occupy on and in our solar system.  Demonstrate the mastery of the facts of the solar system through constructing a poster presentation. The poster will include at least three pictures and nine facts about the solar system.  Identify and label the system diagram printout sheet. Next

Lets watch a space ship take off into outer space! Next

 Closet to the sun  Second smallest planet  Distance from Sun: 36 million miles  Diameter: 3,032 miles  Average Temperature: 330º F  Surface: Silicate rock  Number of Moons: 0 Next

LOOK! LOOK! It’s the sun! Click here to watch a video about the sun. Next

The Sun  The sun is a star.  Made up of hydrogen and helium  11,000º F  All the planets orbit around the sun  Gives us light and heat  Supports all life on our planet Next

Welcome to Venus!  Second planet from the sun  Sixth largest planet  Sometimes called the "Evening Star" or the "Morning Star"  Distance from Sun: 67 million miles  Diameter: 7,521 miles  Average Temperature: 867 º F  Surface: Silicate rock  Number of Moons: 0  Rotates the opposite direction than all other planets Next

LOOK OUT THE WINDOW! WHAT DO YOU SEE? Stars Next

 Third planet from the sun  Fifth largest  Often called the "Water Planet’- 70 % water  Distance from Sun: 93 million miles  Diameter: 7,926 miles  Average Temperature: 59 º F  Surface: Water, basalt, and granite rock  Number of Moons: 1 Next

Welcome to Mars!  Fourth planet from the sun  Seventh largest planet  Often called the "Red Planet“  Distance from Sun: 142 million miles  Diameter: 4,213 miles  Average Temperature: -81 º F  Surface: iron-rich basaltic rich  Number of Moons: 2  Has the largest volcano in the Solar System called Olympus Mons. Next

Comets  Left over from the formation of stars and planets from billions of years ago  Then when it gets close enough to the Sun, the heat begins to melt some of the ice that makes up the comet  Start out as big chunks of rock and ice just floating around in the Oort Cloud Next Click here to watch a video on comets!

Welcome to Jupiter!  Fifth planet from the Sun  The largest planet  Distance from Sun: 484 million miles  Diameter: 88,732 miles  Average Temperature: -162º F  Surface: Liquid hydrogen  Number of Moons: 63 Next

Welcome to Saturn!  Sixth planet from the sun  Second largest planet  Distance from Sun: 887 million miles  Diameter: 74,975 miles  Average Temperature: -218º F  Surface: Liquid hydrogen  Number of Moons: 47 Next

Welcome to Uranus! Next

 Numerous small bodies composed of rock and metal that move around the sun  Shaped like a star Next

 Eighth planet from the sun  Fourth largest planet  Distance from Sun: 2.8 billion miles  Diameter: 30,603 miles  Average Temperature: -330º F  Surface: Liquid hydrogen and helium  Number of Moons: 13 Next

Welcome to Pluto!  Farthest planet from the sun  Smallest planet (although not considered a planet anymore)  Distance from Sun: 3.6 billion miles  Diameter: 1,485 miles  Average Temperature: -369º F  Surface: Rock and frozen gases  Number of Moons: 3 Next

Welcome to the Moon!  The second brightest object in the sky next to the sun  Orbits around the Earth once per month  Has no atmosphere Next
