 Dermagraft ® is a dermal substitute that is a result of original human skin. It is a cell based tissue that is grown on a three dimensional scaffold.  A new packet, will contain cells that are important for the wound to heal.  Dermagraft is packaged in 2in x 3in rectangles.  Nanoskin is an organic fiber layered skin substitute that acts as a building block for the skin to regrow.  It is also packaged individually, for usage.  The Nanoskin is packaged in boxes of 12 packets which contain 10cm x 10cm squares of Nanoskin.

 There are many dermal injuries that are treated by artificial skin.  Burns  Skin deformations/abrasions  Bone regeneration  Ulcers  Excoriations  Epidermolysis Bullosa  There are approximately 150,000 amputations a year. Diabetes is the leading cause of this.

 Artificial skin works by utilizing its coating to protect the affected area from bacteria.  The substitute dermis was designed so that it would not prohibit natural bodily restoration functions.  It provides a layout for the body to follow to reproduce the skin which was once there.  It regulates the humidity and gas conditions inside the wound.  As well, it does not restrict the movement of affected body parts.

 Sixty-four year old female with foot ulcers from a result of Type II diabetes. Took two applications of dermagraft and four months to treat.  Fourty-one year old male, with Type I diabetes ulcer. Took two treatments and five months.  Sixty-seven year old male, with Type II diabetes took a three month weekly treatment.

 Depending on the brand, using artificial skin can a cheap and cost effective way to recover from ulcers, burns, etc.  The price for a box of Nanoskin is $80.00  The application process is fairly easy.  The materials will not prevent you from performing your duties.  They can be easily replaced or removed.  Patients can have a feeling of peace, by removing unsightly injuries that would prevent them from being at their peak mental state.  The treatment is fairly short, 3-5 month period.

 The price per application of Dermagraft is $1,500.00  Nanoskin, may need to be replaced more often.  The transparent character of the artificial skin will be unsightly for a while.

 Researchers are looking to further develop the uses of artificial skin to target more diseases, such as skin cancer.  Looking to incorporate nano-technology to help speed up the healing process.  Wider array of usage, such as on prosthetics.  For large areas, sensors are to be placed on the substitute skin.  More affordable prices for treatments.
