An Eight Year Odyssey in Data Management: Purdue University James L. Mullins, PhD Dean of Libraries & Esther Ellis Norton Professor, Purdue University Research Data Management: Finding Our Role University of Oxford, December 5-6, 2013

Consistently in the Top 50 in The World Rankings for Reputation – (London) Times Higher Education Strength Areas: STEM Fields – Most Recent Honor – Dr. Ei-ichi Negishi – Nobel Laureate in Chemistry – 2010 Enrollment – 37,976; International – 9,509, 3 rd in USA

CRADLE OF ASTRONAUTS 23 NASA astronauts graduated from Purdue Including Neil Armstrong & Gene Cernan, first and last persons to be on the moon.

The PURR Odyssey – How it Started. 2003 - National - “Atkins Report” Revolutionizing Science and Engineering through Cyberinfrastructure – NSF 2004 - 2006 – At Purdue nanoHUB NSF Funded, collaborative software, HUBzero Conversations between Libraries and Researchers Restructuring of Libraries – Associate Dean for Research 2007 - At Purdue Creation of Distributed Data Curation Center (D2C2) NSF DataNet Proposal – using HUBzero platform Creation of Libraries’ Interdisciplinary Research Specialist and Data Research Scientist IMLS Grant for Data Curation Profiles

Jumping Forward Three Years – (otherwise we will be here all day!)

Building Purdue University Research Repository - PURR - 2010 – 2014 (#1) May 2010 – NSF Announcement of Data Management Mandate Summer 2010 – Provost appoints taskforce of faculty researchers – co-chaired by CIO and Dean of Libraries. Fall 2010 - Commitment to develop repository jointly by ITaP, OVPR, and Libraries using HUBzero platform. 2011 - Workshops offered by OVPR and Libraries -introduced Data Curation checklist & Trusted Digital Repository criteria used as framework.

Building Purdue University Research Repository - PURR - 2010 – 2014 (#2) Spring 2012 – Vice-President for Research committed $1,200,000 to develop data repository. Project Director from Libraries asked to lead Data Repository development team –– Purdue University Research Repository – PURR selected as name. Summer 2012 – Data Repository Specialist and programmers hired. Libraries staff including archivists, data and subject specialists dedicated to development. Work with staff from HUBzero and OVPR.

2014 - Next Steps Three universities to collaborate with Purdue on scaling data management: University of Chicago, University of Illinois, and University of Michigan. International collaboration between Purdue Libraries and Tsinghua University and National Science Library (China).

How to start a data management process and implement a data repository. Appreciate and Understand Application of library and archival science principles and theory to data management. Don’t hesitate to Collaborate with faculty (researchers), information technology, research office, and sponsored programs to develop a process and repository to manage and preserve data. Accept that that there is Little or No Precedent to establish sustainability for library e-science/data management.

Purdue Libraries staff of the PURR Working Group (several not included in photograph) and does not include OVPR, Faculty, ITaP (HUBzero) and SPS members.
