2 Recent history has seen the university’s societal role transform Academies Small isolated disengaged 300 years ago Universities were automatically “worthy” Created thinkers and well rounded citizens 200 years ago Universities were considered economic entities Began assisting employers and being recognized for local expenditures 100 years ago Universities legitimized as work force developers Value of imported out-of-area money European Experience European Universities guilds German Universities for industrial development American Research Universities Open, but narrow access indirect engagement

The research university can be a primary driver for regional social change, social and cultural learning and appropriate economic development.
