 Lead is classified as metal (metallic).  Atomic Mass – 7.4167  Symbol – P-block  Atomic Weight – 207.2  Group- 14  Period- 6

 Lead is used for many things such as:  Shields from radiation  storage batteries  Coloring element in ceramic glazes  Lead glass  Piping  Tv tubes  Bullets  Covering cables

 It wasn’t develop it’s a natural. We got this element by mining.  Its found naturally in the Earth’s crust.  Today almost everyone is exposed to environmental lead.  Some ways include: exposure to lead paint, soil/dust near lead industries, roadways, also pluming leachate.

Long term exposure to lead can cause serious health problems. Adults:  Miscarriages/stillbirths  Hearing loss  Seizures  Abnormal sperm Children under the age of 6 are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely affect mental and physical development. At very high levels, lead poisoning can be fatal.

 Numerous scientific studies have reached a consensus: lead poisoning is the biggest threat facing the successful recovery of the California condor.  Most lead-core rifle bullets fragment into hundreds of tiny pieces when they strike animal tissue.  Lead-tainted meat may become part of scavengers' food supplies when any of the following occur: a wounded animal escapes a hunting attempt, an animal shot as a pest is not retrieved from the field, or when gut piles remain on the landscape after a hunt.  Because condors feed on dead animals and are group feeders, even small amounts of lead can sicken or kill many condors

 The MCL of lead is zero (Mg/L). The action level is 0.015. If a person is exposed to lead for a long period of time above the MCL could cause serious health affects such as:  Infants and children: Delays in physical or mental development; children could show slight deficits in attention span and learning abilities  Adults: Kidney problems; high blood pressure

 Clean your house regularly to remove dust & particles that may contain lead.  Children six years of age or under remove any horizontal PVC (plastic) mini-blinds made in Asia or Mexico from your home.  Discourage children from putting things into their mouths unless they are intended to be mouthed.  Avoid eating wild animals that have been shot with lead bullet.  Use non-lead bullets and shots when hunting for food.

 More than 400 children died of lead poisoning in Northern, Nigeria. The deaths occurred in seven villages, in an area of high –intensity wildcat gold mining. For two weeks villagers in Bagega denied any deaths or illnesses among the children in the village. Lead poisoning killed 150 children in 6 months.
