4 Between January 2007 and April 2011, 35 Nebraska businesses trimmed staff or closed their doors, impacted by global competition. 72% of Nebraska workers who lost jobs and were dislocated due to global competition worked in manufacturing. These manufacturing jobs required a narrow set of low-level work skills with limited transferability. Overview: TAA Grant

5 Moving displaced Nebraskans into high wage, high skilled jobs in STS will require considerable skill building, beginning with basic competencies in reading, writing, math, technology and English literacy. They will need opportunities to develop 21st century skills, such as problem solving, innovation and entrepreneurship. According to the community assessment completed for trans*IT planning, these foundational skills are critical to workplace entry and success and they are often lacking among job prospects. 40% of Nebraska adults have attained only a high school diploma or less. Overview: TAA Grant
