2. Flipped Classroom Very hot topic A movement that is taking place in the USA especially. Little research into this Pressure coming from different areas Idea is that we don’t need to lecture anymore. 3. Why Flip a classroom? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aGuLuipTwg&featu re=related We can We are wasting valuable class time We are not with the students when they need us most ( coursework, homework, exams) It is an inefficient way of working. Students need more one on one or focused teaching.

4. Problems Can you see any problems with Flipping the classroom? Has the idea got any relevance in language teaching?

6. My work Worked at University of Westminster Flipped my course ( light version) Put all the content on-line ( free and to the public) Pushed thousands of people onto the on-line content http://www.multimediatrainingvideos.com/ Can you guess what happened?

Results Numbers jumped on the course from 12 to 25 in two years Massive interest in the course Lecture time cut to 1 hour a week and tutorial time doubled Students loved it Tutors didn’t love it so much Several problems –quality of tutorial time, students complaining that content is on-line, copyright issues

8. Can Flipping work in ELT? I think we already do it Flipping might be too much focus on input Requires a lot of work Creating on line content ( linking it) Working out what to do with the free time ( tutorials) Dealing with large classes Correction/Feedback

9. The Connected Classroom My idea not common language. We can get students to do much more interesting things in language outside of the class. We can use tools like mailVu, myBrainShark, Eyejot, Audioboo to record themselves speaking outside of the class.

The Connected Classroom What we do in class and what we do outside of the class ( connect them) For example set up and practice a speaking activity in the lesson but do speaking on own at home and then send it to the student. It is the CONNECTION that is key. The more preparation work you do, the better the students will do the activity.

Experiment Group of Japanese students Drew a time line on the board Spoke about my life Got students to do same Put them in pairs and told them to talk about their lives Gave some feedback Told students to go home and record themseleves Send the emails to me I listened, took notes and provided feedback

13. What worked? Students spoke a lot Shy students really opened up I learnt a lot about them Provided lots of information to me about their level, pronunciation problems, vocabulary etc They enjoyed it Many used up the whole 10 minutes This work is not published yet

14. Problems Have to listen to 18 students talking for up to 10 minutes So much information. How do you deal with it One student had technical problems Obviously need access to computers Done similar experiment with myBrainShark
