6 Located: Madrid Philip II of Spain Designed: chosen to honor Saint Lawrence & celebrate victory over Henry II (France) on 10 August 1557 (feast of St. Lawrence) a. martyred: roasted to death on a gridiron b. floor plan: gridiron to honor the saint c. main building: palace & monastery (decades to build) d. turn complex upside down: 4 corner legs and middle is the grill e. bedrooms: Philip’s on the right & his wife’s on the left each with window looking into the chapel

8 Assignment Philip II of Spain (1556-1598) built the Escorial and Louis XIV of France (1643-1715) built Versailles. Starting with the pictures of these palaces analyze the similarities and differences in the conception and practice of monarchy of these two kings.
