4 Who We Are Community Development Goal Enable adults to learn the basic skills necessary for them to feel viable in the workforce and the community.

6 Why It Matters In the US: Seven million adults, or about 3% of the adult population, could not complete even the most basic literacy tasks. Nearly 1 in 5 adults in the nonliterate in English group had a high school diploma or GED. Among them, more than half (representing roughly 600,000 adults) had earned their high school degree in the US. In North Carolina: In North Carolina more than one million residents cannot read well enough to hold a job. In Mecklenburg County, 20% of all adults are considered functionally illiterate.

8 Where We Can Go The Sky is the Limit!

9 Our Students Volunteer tutors work with culturally diverse students of all ages and academic levels. Tutors have opportunity to learn of sociological issues through interaction with these students. Students range in age from 16-80+ years of age and come from many different ethnic backgrounds including: * African * Asian * Puerto Rican * South American * Mexican * and many more... Students represent varied socio economic backgrounds and include, but are not limited to: * Displaced workers * Functionally limited students * Refugees * Retired workers * Single parents * Work first participants * Those with high school diplomas wishing to enroll in regular curriculum programs but needing to improve admission test scores * and many more...

11 Volunteer Responsibilities Provide encouragement and support by: Acknowledging learners accomplishments Helping the learner become an independent learner. Respecting cultural differences. Be understanding Be supportive when addressing learner’s mistakes. Avoid criticism. Provide positive feedback.
