NetSmartz Internet Safety Program Objective of NetSmartz: to educate both children and adults on how to recognize dangerous situations online and what to do when they occur. Key Component: encouraging honest communication between adults and children/youth on their use of and activities on the Internet. www.netsmartz.org

Support young people’s sense of competence and safety on the Internet through teaching about the dangers on the Internet and how to avoid them. Create a fun, interactive learning environment. To encourage youth to tell a trusted adult when they encounter something online that makes them upset or uncomfortable. NetSmartz Goals:

Three Simple Rules: If children or youth sees something online that makes them feel weird, sad, or uncomfortable, they should get help from an adult. They should never agree to meet in person with anyone they met on the Internet without a parent’s permission. They should never give out personal information without a parent’s permission.

Session plans include: A list of materials needed Session objective and key points covered Introductory discussion questions AND suggested answers A brief description of the CD activity Follow-up discussion questions AND suggested answers Follow-up activities

Why I Like this Program: It teaches children and youth that the Internet is interesting and worthwhile. It teaches about the online dangers in age- appropriate and interactive ways (e.g. using characters and highway danger analogies). It’s clear about how to avoid these dangers and what to do if they are encountered anyway. It throws in some online etiquette. It’s easy to use. It’s free.
