5 Goals for NSSE at the Summer Academy  Acquaint all BEAMS team members with NSSE  Develop BEAMS team expertise about what NSSE measures, its strengths and limitations, and the specifics of your institutional data  Increase the relationship between NSSE data and campus action plans  Encourage consults between NSSE staff, BEAMS consultants, and BEAMS teams  Help schools prepare for second NSSE administration to assess project impact

6 2006 SUMMER ACADEMY Promoting Access and Success for Student of Color  Principal purpose was to develop a “Campus Change Plan”  Session Themes Minority Student Engagement - Tuesday Data Informed Decision Making - Wednesday Sustainability and Long-range change – Thursday  Using NSSE data to make informed decision on campus to address issues. NSSE staff provided assistance on how to ‘mine’ the data to improve institutional efficiency and student performance.

7 2006 SUMMER ACADEMY Promoting Access and Success for Student of Color  NJCU Team divided workshops to cover concurrent sessions for maximum efficiency.  NJCU participated in the Poster Session held on the first day of the Academy  Met with consultant  Prepared daily assignments

9 NJCU BEAMS Project Initiatives

10 Implement a web-based Academic Resource Center serving all NJCU students by providing a wide range of electronic resources to our primarily commuter population Develop template for tutoring/support services data inventory Audit departmental current tutoring /support services Research, develop and list supplementary resources, (i.e., time management, study skills, PowerPoint presentation tips, etc.) Select Faculty/ Staff Co chairs Implement online listing of services

11 Enhance the University’s Center for Teaching and Learning in providing academic enrichment experiences to undergraduate learners. Identify faculty/staff to tutor students in oral communication and presentation skills.

12 Foster the integration of cultural competencies across the curriculum. Select key faculty/staff for committee Gather and review cultural competency models Meet with deans, chairs Provide recommendation to academic deans Hold public forums

13 Outline an initiative involving the University’s CCSV, the CO-OP Program and other institutional resources to integrate experiential learning opportunities within the curriculum. Conduct Fall seminar on applied learning Create joint faculty/staff advisory board Create webpage for Applied & Service Learning Audit university for existing co curricula experiences Develop and post listings of service opportunities

14 Expand the use of the Student Early Alert System among faculty, enabling them to identify students who show early signs of not succeeding and to communicate effectively with academic support service staff for early intervention. Meet with Information Technology Services and University Advisement Center Conduct SEAS faculty/staff training Implement SEAS

15 Formalize the University’s College Access and Persistence Program for Students (CAPPS), which will provide a network of support services for first-year students. Develop CAPP Activities Select 40 CAPP participants to pilot test the program Enroll CAPP students in ‘block scheduled’ First Year Experience

16 Assign all incoming freshmen to a thematically- based learning community (e.g., P100, OSP, TLC, and others to be identified or developed). Identify participating faculty/staff Audit and select best practices Create additional communities

17 Institute a Summer Enrollment Incentive Program aimed at increasing the number of first time full-time freshmen who earn 20 college credits within one year of acceptance. Gather initial data: determine number of students impacted, conduct costs & savings analysis, determine retention potential Develop/Implement publicity/marketing campaign Inform new admits of program Implement program
