2 Terminology ISP – Internet Service Provider. (The company you connect to to get an internet connection.) Spam – Unsolicited e-mail (junk mail) Download – Receiving content from the Internet, to your computer. Upload – Sending content from your computer to the Internet. Modem – A device that allows a computer to make a ‘phone call’ and ‘speak’ to another computer.

3 Terminology DSL or DSL Modem – (Digital Subscriber Line) a device that sends and receives signals transmitted over your phone line. This signal does not interfere with making phone calls. Cable Modem – a device that sends and receives signals over your cable TV connection. This signal does not interfere with viewing cable television. kbps – kilobits per second. A quantitative measurement of connection speed. With computers bigger is better.

4 Using the Internet A.Getting Connected 1.Connection Types  Modem (dialup) 56 kbps – uses a phone line to make a phone call. Some people prefer to get an extra phone line for this reason.  Broadband 128-1544 kbps (much faster than modem) DSL – Limited to 2 mi. from phone company distribution center. Call the ISP to see if it is available at your location. Cable Modem – from Cable TV company Wireless – Requires Line of Sight to an Access Point

8 Using the Internet + sign – requires the word or phrase for a valid results. - sign – requires the word or phrase to not be in the results. “ ” – groups words together into a phrase Common Search Engine Tools

Good: BreakFa$t OR G@soline Bad: Short Passwords, Passwords of anything related to you (such as a dog, birthdays, address, phone number, etc.)

11 Managing Internet Concerns Computer Viruses & Intrusion Precautions (continued) Keep your Operating System up to date (use Windows Update on your START bar) Update your Virus Definitions. This is usually done by SUBSCRIBING to the Virus Definition Update Service.

15 E-Mail A.Using E-mail Your computer usually comes with an e- mail program. Most ISPs will provide support to help you configure your e-mail program. 16 E-Mail B.Sending E-mail Just like you need a mailing address to send a letter, you must know the recipient’s e-mail address to send an e- mail. C.Saving E-mail Addresses All e-mail software will have an ‘Address Book’. Here you can save E-mail Addresses of people you message to.
