2. Terminology ISP – Internet Service Provider. (The company you connect to to get an internet connection.) Spam – Unsolicited e-mail (junk mail) Download – Receiving content from the Internet, to your computer. Upload – Sending content from your computer to the Internet. Modem – A device that allows a computer to make a ‘phone call’ and ‘speak’ to another computer.

3. Terminology DSL or DSL Modem – (Digital Subscriber Line) a device that sends and receives signals transmitted over your phone line. This signal does not interfere with making phone calls. Cable Modem – a device that sends and receives signals over your cable TV connection. This signal does not interfere with viewing cable television. kbps – kilobits per second. A quantitative measurement of connection speed. With computers bigger is better.

4. Using the Internet A.Getting Connected 1.Connection Types  Modem (dialup) 56 kbps – uses a phone line to make a phone call. Some people prefer to get an extra phone line for this reason.  Broadband 128-1544 kbps (much faster than modem) DSL – Limited to 2 mi. from phone company distribution center. Call the ISP to see if it is available at your location. Cable Modem – from Cable TV company Wireless – Requires Line of Sight to an Access Point
