1 Section 2 – Characteristics of the American Economy

2 Limited role of Government “Individuals left on their own would work for their own self-interest. In doing so, the would be guided as if by an invisible hand to use resources efficiently and thus achieve the maximum good for society.” – 1776, Adam Smith, Economist

3 Limited role of Government cont… Capitalism – economic system in which private individuals own the factors of production.  Another name for the market system. Laissez-faire – economic system in which the government minimizes its interference with the economy.  French for “Let the people do as they choose.”

4 Freedom of enterprise Free enterprise system – economic system in which individuals own the factors of production and decide how to use them within legal limits; same as capitalism. Individuals are free to own the factors of production If you want to go into business you have the freedom even though you may become rich or go broke in doing so.

5 Profit incentive Profit – money left after all the costs of production— wages, rents, interest, and taxes have been paid. Profit incentive – desire to make money that motivates people to produce and sell goods and services. This desire motivates entrepreneurs to start new businesses and produce new kinds of goods and services. This desire motivates entrepreneurs to start new businesses and produce new kinds of goods and services. Also causes the chance of failing. Failing is a signal to move resources elsewhere. This interaction of profit/loss leads to an economy that is efficient, adaptable to change, and continuously changing. 6 Private property Private property – whatever is owned by individuals rather than by the government. One of the most important characteristics of capitalism. One of the most important characteristics of capitalism. You as an individual are free to buy whatever you can afford. You as an individual are free to buy whatever you can afford. You can also control how, when, and by whom your property is used. You can also control how, when, and by whom your property is used.

7 Competition Competition – rivalry among producers or sellers of similar goods and services to win more business. Competition is caused by the lure of profits $$$. Effective competition requires a large number of sellers. Competition leads to efficient use of resources. In order to have competition there must be a weak barrier of entry and exit. Example: starting up a lawn care business.

8 Independent practice Write a newspaper editorial supporting or opposing the following statement: The government should play a greater role in the American economy.
