2 The Institute for Learning supports FE teachers across all career stages We give a warm welcome to those who have recently started to teach or train, and invite you to become a member of IfL as your professional body. We offer professional status and professional development opportunities, a professional journal, a sense of belonging and more…. The Institute for Learning’s object is to support teachers be as good as they can be in their practice. We complement and extend support available from your college or provider Our patrons strongly support teachers in FE having high status and are: Stella Mbubaegbu CBE, Principal and Chief Executive of Highbury College Geoff Petty, writer, staff trainer and consultant on teaching and learning Baroness Margaret Sharp of Guildford, formerly Liberal Democrat spokesperson for further and higher education Lord Tim Boswell of Aynho, former Conservative minister for further and higher education Professor Ann Hodgson, Institute of Education Baroness Helena Kennedy of the Shaws QC, member of the House of Lords; chair of Justice and Principal of Mansfield College, University of Oxford Barry Sheerman, Labour member of parliament for Huddersfield and former chair of the education select committee 2

3 About us The Institute for Learning (IfL) is the independent, member-led professional body for tens of thousands of teachers, trainers, tutors and assessors working across the diverse further education (FE) and skills sector including: adult and community learning emergency and public services FE colleges the armed services sixth-form colleges the voluntary sector work-based learning Formed in 2002, IfL specialises in teaching, training and learning. As a professional body, IfL has a distinct role in supporting individuals to be excellent in their practice, thereby enhancing the professional status of teachers and trainers. This complements and extends the support given by the college or provider. Teachers and trainers choose to be a member of IfL as the professional body. As an independent professional body, IfL is governed by an advisory council comprising elected members and some stakeholders and an elected non-executive board. IfL works closely with several sector organisations, unions and employer bodies. IfL is distinct from trade unions.governed by an advisory council 3
