 Some words have more than one meaning.  To find the correct definition, you have to read the entire sentence in context.  Example: In which of these sentences does miss mean “to feel sad because something is not there”?  It’s easy to miss a fastball.  Hurry, or we will miss the movie.  When I’m away, I miss my family.

 This section involves reading a story and being able to explain parts of it.  It also involves making guesses about what the characters were thinking.  You will have to make predictions about what will happen after the story ends.

 Read “When Disaster Strikes” (pp.243- 249) and “Unwinding the Magic Thread” (pp.309-317) again for more help with this section.

 Subject/verb agreement: (ex: The student is failing. / The students are failing.)  Capitalization: (ex: are you going to the mall after work? / Are you going to the mall after work?)  Missing words: (ex: How old you? / How old are you?)

 If you were going to write about someone in your family, what would you need to do?  How can you describe someone to your reader if the reader has never met him/her? (HINT: Be Descriptive!)  To describe someone or something, you need to answer the 5Ws (who, what, where, when, why)  Colorful words are descriptive.

 Write a paragraph about a character in a story you have read, who would you choose? Why? How would you describe this character? What did the character do in the story?
