I CAN GESTURE AND SAY NEW VOCABULARY WORDS. I CAN ORALLY INFORMATION ABOUT SPACE. Created by: Laura Orcutt SPACE

VOCABULARY Astronaut: A person who explores outerspace. Someone who travels and works in a spacecraft Star: a large ball of burning gas in space that can be seen at night as a point of light in the sky: Planet: A very large round object in space that moves around the sun or another star:

VOCABULARY Constellation: A group of stars that forms a particular pattern and has a name: Astronomy: The scientific study of the stars and planets

ASTRONAUTS Astronauts travel to space to collect information for scientist to study. Astronauts sometimes also have to fix spacecrafts once there are in space. Living in space is very different from living on Earth. Here on Earth we are surrounded by air, but there is no air in space, that’s why astronauts need to wear spacesuits and helmets. Also in space nothing has weight and you need to wear a spacesuit to go outside the spaceship.

ASTRONAUTS JOHN GLEN ~ Served in the Military and flew planes. ~ Circled the Earth three times in a Sapcecraft ~First manned orbital mission around the earth

ASTRONAUT NEIL ARMSTRONG ~Flew Jets in the Navy ~First Man to step on the Moon in 1969 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVtGUTEzo6A&feature=related

ASTRONAUT SALLY RIDE ~Favorite subjects in school were math and science. ~ First woman in space

STARS ~There are different types of stars. ~A few stars are bigger than the sun. ~Stars are very, very hot and made of gas ~When a star burns out it is called a SUPERNOVA. ~Some stars live for billions of years and some life for trillions of years.

SUN The sun is a star.. It is too hot for an astronaut to visit, but it does have some cooler spots ~Light from the Sun can reach the Earth in only 8 minutes! This is called the speed of light. ~The Sun is nearly 93 million miles from Earth

PLANETS There are nine planets Rocky Planets: Made up of Rocks and Metal Mercury Venus Earth Mars Pluto Gas Planets: Made up of Gas and have a lot of rings and moons. Jupiter Saturn Uranus Pluto The planet we live on is Earth. It is a small, rocky planet.

CONSTELLATIONS A constellation is a group of stars that form pictures in the sky such as animals and people. Most constellations come with their own stories. http://www.kidsastronomy.com/astroskymap/constellation_hunt.htm

MOON The moon is 240,00 miles away from the earth. The moon spins on an axis as it rotates around the earth. The moon is rocky. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vUObZwLJ8A&feature=r elated

ROCKETS AND SPACE SHUTTLES Rockets We use rockets to carry astronauts and things into space. Rockets are the only engines that can give enough power and speed to get the spacecraft into space. The fuel burning in the engine rushes out of the nozzle and pushes the rocket forward. Just like if you blow a wrapper from a straw. The Space Shuttle The space shuttle can lift off into space just like a rocket and then come back to Earth like a huge glider. When the shuttle returns to Earth through the atmosphere, it gets very hot. Special tiles protect the spaceship from the heat so that it doesn’t burn up and can be used again for the next space flight.
