Butte County Public Works Presents: Roscoe the Recycling Raccoon Hello folks, my name’s Roscoe the Raccoon. Today I’m going to tell you about the importance of recycling and what happens when we just throw stuff away.

Why Recycle? … … ….. When you throw something in the garbage it just doesn’t disappear, it gets picked up by the garbage man and gets taken to the…

…Landfill And that’s why we should recycle. Ya’ see, this landfill is real close to where I live. And it’s getting bigger. And a lot of that stuff doesn’t need to go there.

What kinda’ Stuff? You know about cans and bottles, and how they can be recycled… But did you know that things like old magazines, junk mail, cardboard, newspapers, plastic milk jugs, & stuff like that? Also, clothes you outgrew or toys you don’t play with can be recycled by giving them away to charities. (or little brothers & sisters)

What else can be Recycled? Lotsa’ other stuff. Like the oil out of your parents car, the leaves that fall from the trees every year, that old computer that doesn’t work anymore, or even the broccoli you didn’t eat last night! None of that stuff needs to go to the landfill. …Hey, I’ll eat that broccoli!

How can I Recycle? Collect and wash out all those empty bottles, cans, milk jugs and peanut butter jars you use. Stack up and bundle those newspapers and magazines. Then either place them in a recycling container if you have one or have your parents help you take them the nearest Recycling Center. The amount you recycle can easily be more than the amount you throw away! Recycling saves energy too!

What else can we do? Reuse the good stuff we have. Buy stuff that makes less waste or lasts longer. Bigger packages or no packages Avoid “Disposable” things when a reusable things will work Buy less stuff. Buy recycled stuff. Teach your parents good recycling habits. Visit www.RecycleButte.net for more information.
