5 Religious Studies Lesson 4 – Jesus (a Jew) Last lesson we looked at promises and the prophecies found in Jewish Holy Books about Abraham, Moses and the Messiah to come. Today you will: Consider how Jesus meets the prophecies of the Messiah Learn how to take notes to help you to complete a piece of extended writing next lesson

6 Religious Studies Lesson 4 – Jesus a Jew In the Bible there are 4 books that tell the story of Jesus – they are collectively called the Gospels. They contain the following quotes about Jesus: ‘And they crucified him’ (Mark 15:24) ‘Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea’ (Matthew 2:1) ‘Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spat on him’ (Mark 15:19) ‘God sent the Angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin … The virgin’s name was Mary’ (Luke 1:26) How do they compare to the prophecies made about the Messiah? – look back at previous task.

7 Last Lesson Throughout Jewish history prophets spoke of a saviour to come - they called him the Messiah. The promises said: ‘He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain’ (Isaiah 53:3) ‘He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy’ (Isaiah 11:3-4) ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son’ (Isaiah 7:14) ‘Bethlehem … out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel’ (Micah 5:2)

8 Religious Studies Jesus We are going to study the words and actions of Jesus to understand why Christians believe he is not only the Messiah but is God in human form. Now a visual source Miracle Maker Whilst watching you will need to take notes about what Jesus says and does to help you to write your biography of him next lesson so pay attention

9 Religious Studies Jesus - Task To complete your short biography of Jesus. You will need to write: an introduction about him as a Jew a paragraph about what he said (his teachings) a paragraph about what he did (miracles he performed) a conclusion about his life reflecting on him as the Messiah and the Son of God With these paragraphs in mind - keep your note writing selective – use only the most important parts of the story and briefly note down what is said and done.
