18 COLLECTIVE WORSHIP Collective: Worship in schools will necessarily be different in character from worship amongst a group with beliefs in common. The legislation reflects this difference in referring to ‘collective worship’ rather than ‘corporate worship’. Worship: ‘…it must in some sense represent something special or separate from ordinary school activities and it should be concerned to some veneration paid to a divine being or power.’ Education Reform Act 1988 s.6 (1) WHAT IS COLLECTIVE WORSHIP?

27 COLLECTIVE WORSHIP IT’S THE LAW Sixth-form colleges/schools should provide an act of collective worship for students. Collective worship can involve pupils in different groups at different times. Collective worship should be mainly Christian in its character. Teachers have the right to withdraw from collective worship. Pupils are encouraged to actively participate in collective worship. Pupil Referral Units do not have to provide an act of collective worship.

28 COLLECTIVE WORSHIP IT’S THE LAW ‘Collective worship’ and ‘school assembly’ are not the same thing. Secondary schools have to provide one act of collective worship per day for pupils. Schools are not permitted to focus their collective worship mainly on the beliefs of one Christian denomination. A school can apply not to have an act of collective worship. Parents/guardians can withdraw their children from collective worship.

29 Do avoid jargon Do keep control of the children Do stick to time Do be sensitive Do involve the children Do be early Do prepare well Do be flexible Do think about their age Do work with staff
