In your answer you must have a clear structure which uses relevant and appropriate source material to answer this question well.

What is the question? Option evaluating questions will ask you to pick one of two options or choices and then give 3 detailed reasons why you made that choice. [3 x 2 = 6 marks] They will also ask you why you rejected the other option and to give 2 detailed reasons why you did. [2 x 2 = 4 marks]

Past Option Question Topics Build a new call centre [2003] At Newtonhall OR at Inverkirk. Rockford Mayor [2005] Brent Landon OR Louise Crossan. Development Project [2007] Rose Energy OR Helping Hands Party Candidate [2008] Kirsty Reid OR Robbie McKay They can be on different topics in different syllabus areas but the way to answer them is the same.

You might get a question like the next one. There is a lot to do but be calm and think. Print it out. Do not try it at the moment.

SOURCE 2 Use only the Rockford City Record and Sources 1 and 2 above. 1)State which person would be the more suitable to be elected Mayor of Rockford City. 2)Give three detailed reasons to support your choice. 3)Give two detailed reasons why you rejected the other candidate. In your answer, you must relate information from the Rockford City Record to the information about the two candidates. (Enquiry Skills, 10 marks) I am Louise Crossan and have a business employing 35 local people. An important issue is the local economy. I think we should attract new businesses to the city to create more jobs and give higher pay so our economic growth continues. The recent floods caused by Hurricane Brenda took us all by surprise. I will make investment in flood prevention schemes my main priority. As a local businesswoman I know that we have good schools which produce well trained pupils. Local people agree with me when I say we do not need them improved or changed. The condition of our streets is very poor and regular maintenance must be improved. I will work to ensure the completion of improved highways to our neighbouring cities. I will not waste money on Voter Registration Programme as democracy already works well in Rockford. I know the local issues and have the answers, ‘Cross Crossan’. I am Brent Vandon and am a member of Rockford High School board. Education is my first priority. I will make the changes to education that are wanted by Rockford residents and bring children from all racial backgrounds together. Public transport is poor and is seen as an very important issue and so should be greatly improved. Another important issue is the need for parks and open spaces where people can enjoy their leisure time. They do not need a new shopping complex, Red Pines should be left as it is. The city has been spending too much causing local taxes to be increased. To cut taxes I will stop unimportant projects like a new flood defence scheme. I will expand the Voter Registration Programme to get more people involved in local politics which is important for local democracy. As Mayor I will address all the important issues and am the best choice, ‘Vote Vandon’. The two people below are hoping to be elected Mayor of Rockford City. SOURCE I The Rockford City Record All is not well in Rockford City. We may be a wealthy community with incomes well above the national average, however, there are a number of issues which concern local people. We decided to find out what was concerning local people in the run up to the elections for Mayor by conducting an Opinion Poll to which 76% of Rockford homes replied. Education, Education, Education There are over 7000 students attending the schools in Rockford City and the standard of education is very good. Rockford High school is old and in poor condition and is due to be rebuilt. Most residents want to see it being turned into a magnet school which will promote racial integration and offer better course options for a much wider range of pupils for other towns. Red Pine Development The proposed new Red Pine commercial project will provide a range of shopping, recreation And dining opportunities. Local businessmen believe that this will help economic growth, Attracting shoppers from other towns. However, at present the site is an attractive wood used by many local people for leisure. Public transport is poor. Most people make extensive use of their cars and the condition of many roads has been criticised. There have also been calls to improve the main road to the state capital to help commuters reach their work and attract new jobs to the city. Ravaged Rockford In 2007, Hurricane Brenda caused serious flooding in the area. As a result many homes and businesses were damaged and it is estimated that it will cost over $200 million to put right. The risk is likely to rise due to global warming. Improvements to the storm water drainage system would help reduce this risk in the future. Study the front page of the Rockford City Record and Sources 1 and 2, then answer the question which follows. 24%The Local Economy / Jobs 8%Public Transport 35%Flood Defences 34%Poor Schools 25%The Environment What do you think are the most important issues facing Rockford City today? 7 How should you tackle this question?

First of all ….. Do not be fooled by the question. You can look at all the information, compare the options and decide on one BUT

Just pick ONE You can just pick one of the choices or options and do it. Both will have enough information for your choice to be correct.

Just Pick One Rockford Mayor [2005 adapted] Brent Vandon OR Louise Crossan

Highlighters Use a GREEN highlighter to highlight the correct information that supports your choice. Use a RED highlighter to highlight the wrong information that rejects the one you did not choose.

Linking Remember to link any sources to the information you are given. This information may be written, statistics or graphs. You can draw lines on your question paper between your highlighted bits and the correct information to help you do this.

Linking Brent Vandon … I will change the school … Info on Rockford Rockford High is old and in poor condition and is due to be rebuilt. Brent says ‘ I will change the school’ which links to the info on Rockford which says ‘Rockford High is old and in poor condition and needs to be rebuilt’ making him my choice.

How you should tackle this question. 1.Work on the ‘reasons to support’ first. 2.Work on the ‘reasons to reject’ second. 3.‘Prove what you say’ with detailed information and statistics from the sources.

Make sure your answer is ‘in detail’.

In detail 1.Each reason will be worth 2 marks. 2.You must give at least 2 different pieces of written information, statistics, information from a table, graph, map for each reason for a really good answer. 3.This is ‘in detail’. 4.Write each reason as a separate paragraph so the marker can easily mark what you have done. 5.  3 x 2 [support] = 6 marks 6.  2 x 2 [reject] = 4 marks 7.Overall 10 out of 10.

Now try the question.

Give two detailed reasons why you rejected the other candidate. I rejected Louise Crossan for 2 reasons. First she says that local people do not want schools improved or changed. This is wrong as local people want Rockford High turned into a magnet school to promote racial harmony and 34% think poor schools an important issue. Louise says democracy in Rockford works and a VRP is a waste of money so she is also wrong as only 22% voted in the last election and more people voting would make their opinions count.
