Benefits of the Internet Plethora of information delivered quickly The internet can be helpful when creating differentiation It is available for use at many locations, most for free! Communication and news can be spread in a fast, convenient way

DANGERS There are some things to beware of when using the internet: Cyber Bullying Online Predators/Stalkers Hackers spreading viruses through pop-up ads or fake websites Content not appropriate for viewing

Use the Four R’s to remain safe! R ecognize the tactics that predators and hackers use to lure in victims and get your information R efuse to give any of your personal information out to any person or site claiming to need it R espond to uncomfortable situations with assertiveness! Do not be afraid to deny a conversation or exit out of something that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe! R eport any site or activity that contains content or messages that make you feel uncomfortable to a trusted adult.

More tips for school and home computer use NEVER give out any personal information (this includes your gender, age, address, school name, or telephone number) NEVER stay on a site that you know is not an approved site If you feel you need to hide the screen from parents or teachers, it is NOT an approved site NEVER make plans to meet a person you have met on the internet

Students Remember: Keep your personal information to yourself! Any adult online should not pursue a relationship with you Choose usernames that keep you anonymous Do not open attachments in emails from unknown sources, these can contain viruses that will crash your computer or steal personal information from you Never send photos of yourself a stranger online! Any picture you post online can become fair game for hackers or other predators It is easy for people to lie about who they are when in an online chat room Downloading movies and music online without paying for them is illegal and can be punished under federal law.

Online Class Tips for Students: Figure out how you will deal with technical issues before the semester starts Connect with the students in your online class by swapping email addresses, IM addresses or phone numbers if you are comfortable with that Your professor can still be contacted if you need help! Be sure to still reserve around 2-3 hours of study time outside of class per credit hour of the class

Keeping the Internet Safe and Fun at Home Before allowing children to use the internet, become well educated on different aspects of this tool Talk with your kids about the things you have learned and find our what they know about it Come up with a plan for using the internet with your kids Set up any protective measure possible on your computer As a family, get on the internet together and go to some sites your family may frequently use
