2 English and History Cross Curricular Activity  This is an activity that you will be developing between now and May to help you think about historical characters using English language arts like drama, role play, interview, poetry etc.

3 Historical Period to be studied in History lesson Between the the World Wars i.e. from World War 1 to World War 2

4 Idea to be developed in English lesson  You can choose any major historical figure from between the wars using role play,interviews, video, drama,poetry, historical news report, poetry etc.  Explore through one of these methods either the historical figure (person ) or the time that they lived and ruled.  You can make a drama about people who lived during that time to try to give some idea about what it was like.  This will count for your course mark in English and History subjects

6 The rise of the Fascists (Nazis) in Germany and Italy between WW1 and WW2 

7 The Great Economic Depression and the rise of the Nazis /Fascists  The Great Depression meant that people were very poor and had no jobs and very little to eat so strong,powerful leaders such as Hitler, Mussolini were able to take power.  They became so powerful that they thought they could rule the world and this resulted in WW2

8 The Holocaust : Over 2 million Jewish people were murdered by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis in Concentration camps 

9 Some of the major figures between the wars  Adolf Hitler  Fascist dictator and leader of Germany throughout the 1930 ’ s.  He killed himself in 1945 as the Americans were going to capture him

10  Winston Churchill  Leader of the UK during WW2. He helped defend western Europe from Nazi attacks and rule.

11  Hideki Tojo  He was general of the Japanese air force that invaded Pearl harbour and he led the Japanese in their invasion of Asia.  Japan was supported by Germany and Italy

12  Josef Stalin  Leader of the Communists in Russia  He helped to beat Hitler and the nazis during WW2  Like Mao Tse Dung in China,many of his own people died because of his policies

13  Benito Mussolini  He was the fascist dictator of Italy during WW2  He supported Germany and Japan during WW2

14  Franklin D Roosevelt  President of the USA  During the Great Economic Depression and the start of WW2  He helped America and the world recover from hunger and the depression

24 Questions  What do you think it was like to be German and live during Hitler ’ s time in Germany?  What do you think it was like to be Jewish and live during Hitler ’ s time in Germany?  Japan under Tojo  USA under Roosevelt

25 Try to imagine living during the time of Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo  E.g.  If I had lived in Germany under Hitler, my life would have been very hard

26 Group Discussion  Your History Teacher has asked you to chose a historical figure or country, from between the wars which you are most interested in. Discuss the time which they lived and give reasons for your choice.

30 Home work  The Nazis  The Holocaust  You have to produce a drama or a newscast about one of the above subjects. Can you come up with any ideas that you could turn into a drama or a newscast. Try to think about what it was like to be a child during WW2.

31 Which person from History did you choose?  How did this person influence ordinary people ’ s lives?  Try to think about what it was like to live during this person ’ s time in power?

32 Story : ordinary people in extraordinary times in history  Anne Frank : she was a thirteen year year Jewish girl who went into hiding with her family.  She kept a diary every day and was almost caught by the Nazis.She survived and her diary became famous all over the world.  A Christian family brought her family food every day for 3 years.

33 Jack Mandelbaum  He was taken from his mother and father to a concentration camp in Germany when he was only 15 years old. He lived there with almost no food for 2 years and he escaped.He later joined the British army and fought against the Nazis.

34 Little Orphan Annie(Fictional)  She was a little girl with no parents who lived during the Great Depression in the USA. Her life was very hard but she was always optimistic. She was adopted a the most famous business man in America. President Rooseveld helped many poor people like Annie when he introduced welfare for the first time in the US. People became confident again and the world economy recovered. His idea was called ‘ The New Deal ’

35 Lily Marlane(Fictional)  She was a famous singer who was popular all over Germany in the 1920s. When Hitler and the Nazis came to power in the 1930s,she was arrested and taken to a Concentration camp because she was Jewish. She died there but her story gave hope to many people and a famous song was written about her.
