Or… How we made a multifunctional web presence Using what our campus techs had Without loading our own software Without much coding expertise And without going crazy (much) Using iterative user-centered design (though we did violate some design guidelines)
3
Drew University Library 3 colleges: - College of Liberal Arts– undergraduate - Theological School – Methodist Seminary - Caspersen School – eclectic graduate programs - Student FTE 2200 - Heavy undergraduate support focus - Extensive special collections, esp. Methodist - Staff includes - 5.5 Reference Librarians - Part time Webmanager - Part time E-Resources Manager - Systems (ILS) Librarian
4
Drew Library Web Infrastructure Main pages in Wordpress (institution-wide CMS) Course guides, subject guides, policies and finding aids in Confluence (enterprise-wide wiki system) Library Catalog in SIRSI Web 2 Reference Chat in LibraryH3lp Delicious web link management Just added: ILLiad, LibraryAnywhere
5
Web Development Simple layout Iterative design Card sorts Wire frame layouts Yearly user observation testing Standard 12-15 questions 4-6 subjects Conducted by pairs of library staff Must be intuitive to edit/create pages
6
Usability Targets Books by subject Journal holdings by date Scholarly articles by subject Find ejournals by issue Ask a librarian a question online Use an online reference book Find out library hours Contact reference subject specialist Check patron record Inter-Library Loan Request Find a map Contact for a special collection Geneaological information/help Locate an advanced subject database General comments or suggestions?
7
Wordpress CMS Open Source Institution-wide look and feel frame Very helpful campus webteam Auto-generated menus Custom post types for Electronic resources Web links Formidable Forms plugin Online user forms (acq, ref, ILL) Reference Statistics collection
8
Wordpress 3.3 (latest) Library has its own subspace in Wordpress Need help putting widgets/javascript on pages Local customization includes Custom Post Types for library iframes (to show external content, widgets) “Aside” sidebars & Tabs http://www.drew.edu/wp-guide/ Custom search across both sites Formidable Forms
10
Research Resources page
11
Formidable Forms Plugin Customizeable forms Send email and/or keep in database Custom messages Conditional fields Pre-fillable fields Reports available
12
Example: Formidable Form
13
E-Resources & Web Links Separate custom post types CustomPostType UI Plugin makes it easy to create these “Resource Type” Subject Category Taxonomy Each “Resource Type” = separate web page. Entry has Title, Blurb (‘text’), and Redirect URL. Choosing multiple “Resource Type” Categories puts resource on those pages. Full Title list also generated Can copy ‘shorten’ URLS for resource
15
Managing the list:
16
Editing E-Resource Entry
17
Confluence Wiki application with access/editing control levels Limitable access/editing at multiple levels Simple editing, image & pdf attachment Searchable Clean printouts Autolinking & menuing Macros such as Table of contents, sortable tables
18
Example: Course Guides Listing Auto-updated when a guide is added
19
Example: Archival Finding Aid
20
Example: Policies
21
SIRSI Web2 Extensive Customization (spring 2011) Primarily Web2 Macros and some Javascript No interactive real-time API scripts running Static pages generated regularly by API Reserve lists New Books Special collections Dedicated Systems Librarian Guy Dobson- gdobson@drew.edu
23
E-Resource Management Tools Ezproxy for Remote user proxying Serials Solutions (ERMS) Generates A-Z list URL linker Citation Manager & A-Z list incorporated in Wordpress via iframe
25
LibraryH3lp Embeddable live chat windows Replaced MeeboMe Features Queues Transfer Audible Beep email of transcript reports, statistics Software open source; We pay for hosted service Embedded in several entrance pages Main page, Research Resources, Ask a Librarian pages Inside Ebsco Databases Inside SIRSI catalog

Delicious Used to manage web links All subject librarians used same account Standardized subject tag names Tag-based RSS feed Widgets incorporated to subject pages Mostly dropped now Changes to Delicious – removal of support for widgets Web links were converted to specialized Wordpress post type. Delicious feeds still used on Alumni link pages, with ‘tabs’ code in Wordpress
29
Moodle Open Source Learning Management system Online library instruction module Content organized in “Book” Assessments using Quizzes Linked to sections of First Year Survey Campus-wide surveys in Moodle’s survey tool

Library Survey & Results
32
Additional Services PDF files served from departmental web space Google Analytics for stats Twitter mostly to reach other campus departments & University Communications New: LibraryAnywhere (mobile) – contract award ILLiad (formerly used CLIO) Development office for Online Giving service

We did it Our students/staff find it intutive Staff involved/invested in the design Nobody had to get nailed anything. About time for another round of iteration! Jennifer Heise jheise@drew.edu
