2 Responsive Reading of the Ten Commandments
Worship Sourcebook page 132

3 The God who saved us in Jesus Christ gave this law, saying: I am the Lord your God! You shall have no other gods before me. We will worship the Lord our God and serve only him. You shall not make yourself an image of anything to worship it. Living no more in bondage to earthly gods, we will worship the Lord our God in spirit and in truth.

4 You shall not misuse the name of the Lord.
We will use the holy name of God with reverence, praising him in everything we do and say. You shall observe the Sabbath by keeping it holy, for in six days you shall labor and do all your work. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

5 You shall honor your father and mother, that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving to you. As children we will be obedient to our parents in the Lord; as parents we will correct our children and guide them in the training and instruction of the Lord; we will respect the lawful authorities appointed by God.

6 You shall not murder. We will be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave us. You shall not commit adultery. We will use our bodies in ways that are holy and honorable, and abstain from immorality and impurity.

7 You shall not steal. We will do what we can for our neighbor’s good, and work faithfully so that we may share with the poor. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. We will speak the truth with our neighbor in love, render judgments that are true and make for peace, and not devise in our hearts any evil against anyone.

8 You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.
We will be content whatever the circumstances through the strength of Christ within us. Thus we must love our neighbor as ourselves. For the Lord requires of us to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God. Amen!

10 (The Lost Younger Brother) Luke 15: 11-32
The Wild Son (The Lost Younger Brother) Luke 15: 11-32

11 The Wild Son Luke 15: 11-32 Help with familiar story from Tim Keller “The Prodigal God” What does ‘prodigal’ mean? 1. Characterized by profuse or wasteful expenditure, Lavish. 2. recklessly spendthrift yielding abundantly: luxuriant. Prodigal is the opposite of frugal.

12 The Wild Son Luke 15: 11-32 Parable of _____?(lost son, two sons?)
Focus on ‘prodigal’ or lost son only misses real message… Jesus said “There was a man who had two sons” –Two ways to be alienated from God. 15:1-2 –two groups of people hearing this: ‘sinners’ & Pharisees.

13 The Wild Son Luke 15: 11-32 Then other parables, lost sheep and lost coin directed at ‘sinners’. Then this one to both? No, focus on older brother’s attitude. Both sons selfish, not good relationship with the Father. V.31 he doesn’t want relationship, just the stuff.

14 The Wild Son Luke 15: 11-32 Parable is about attitudes toward people who need God! …and about wanting God’s blessings but not relationship. “Son leaving is heartless breaking of the home and community…” H. Nouwin He hit bottom, but “When he came to his senses…” v. 17

15 The Wild Son Luke 15: 11-32 He came to his senses!!
That’s the grace of God! Do we accept wild ones back? Fathers grace: letting him go, watching, running, welcoming… We’re loved so much we can leave and be welcomed back. “Grace will lead me home”

16 The Wild Son Luke 15: 11-32 Jesus’ message welcomed outcasts.
Jesus says to religious leaders “the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.” (Matt. 21:31) “…If our churches aren’t appealing to younger brothers, they must be more full of elder brothers than we’d like to think.” (Keller p )

17 The Wild Son Luke 15: 11-32 Probably too harsh, but worth considering.
Pray we’re open to truly sharing the true Gospel of Jesus as he did!
