2 ChBE 0010  OLD Bulletin Description   THERMODYNAMICS AND PROCESS CALCULATIONS I  CHBE0010   Applications of conservation of mass and energy to industrial chemical processes, with emphasis on engineering units/dimensions and stoichiometric relationships. Thermodynamic concepts – first and second laws, heat, work, energy, entropy, equilibrium, reversibility, equations of state – are introduced in process contexts. Emphasis in Part II on multiphase, multicomponent, and reactive systems. 6 ChBE 0039  OLD Bulletin Description   APPLIED MATHEMATICS AND SOFTWARE FOR CHEMICAL ENGINEERING  CHBE0039  This course covers analytical techniques including Laplace transformation and the use of Bessel and other special functions; and numerical methods of analysis of non- linear problems and their implementation using commercially available software. The use of process simulation for chemical and biological processes is also covered.  NEW Bulletin Description   APPLIED NUMERICAL METHODS FOR CHEMICAL & BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING  CHBE0039   Numerical analysis methods and their implementation using commercially available software are reviewed. Scientific programming methodology. The application of commercial process simulation software for the analysis of chemical and biological process models is introduced.   Prerequisites: CHBE 0010, CHBE 0011 (concurrently)

The internship must conform to all the requirements of the School of Engineering Internship Program. The department will grant course credit for internships if all of the following conditions are met: 1) The project is approved in advance by the department, 2) a faculty mentor has supervisory and technical control of any work that receives credit, and 3) a written report is submitted that is evaluated by the faculty adviser and the outside institutional supervisor. 10 ChBE 201  OLD Bulletin Description   MATHEMATICAL METHODS IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING  CHBE 101   Application of numerical methods and digital computers to the solution of mathematical problems in chemical engineering. Subjects include interpolation and approximation, roots of algebraic equations, numerical integration, and solution to ordinary and partial differential equations.   Prerequisites: For Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students   NEW Bulletin Description   MATHEMATICAL METHODS IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING  CHBE 201   Systematic study of the solution of an algebraic equation, ordinary and partial differential equations or a set of equations. Emphasis is placed on the many similarities and the few differences of these three classes of problems utilizing vector space concepts. Specific topics include: linear independence; basis vectors and functions; eigenvalues, eigenvector and eigenfunctions; initial and boundary value problems; generalized Fourier series; Sturm-Louisville problems; Green's function. Application examples in the following areas are used to demonstrate the concepts: chemical reaction engineering, heat conduction and mass diffusion in one, two, or three dimensions at the steady state or in the transient mode. Emphasis is placed on linear problems but nonlinear ones are also discussed. The computational environment used is MATLAB.   Prerequisites: Graduate Engineering Student or Permission of Instructor

24  CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY  CHBE0052  Open-ended labratory laboratory projects in an area of applied and industrial interest of chemical and biological engineering. Students work in groups and choose one project for the whole term. They are asked to not only analyze the results of a given experiment but also decide what are the important experiments to perform as part of their overall plan to bring their project to a successful conclusion. Oral presentations and written reports are an integral part of this laboratory course.

25  PRODUCT & PROCESS DESIGN  CHBE0060   This is a capstone design course covering the principles of design and economic evaluation through the preliminary design of a commercial project related to a product or a process. Working in groups on assigned or selected portions of the overall project, students are required to make intregrated integrated use of a wide variety of fundamentals and principles gained from previous courses. Computational laboratories are supplemental supplemented by appropirate lectures. Use of design software. Prerequisites Chemical and Biological Engineering 11, 39, 45.
