2 INTRODUCTION Exercise…get to know your classmates 1.Type in the text chat: Short answers – your general location (area/state) and something unusual/memorable that you can share with the class (Ex: ride a Harley, dog lover, sing, etc - one sentence). 2.NEXT: Wait until a number of students have answered and then type a student’s name, their location, and their memorable thing. 3.Continue: Select classmates until everyone has been entered at least three entries. 4.READ: Repeat at least ONE of entries

Yes, you do need to participate in the seminar or you need to take the quiz. 1204C Term Course Calendar: Begins September 19 th and ends November 27 th Holiday: Thanksgiving – November 22 through 25 (Thursday through Sunday)

4 CLASS CONTENT Course Outcomes By the end of this course, you should be able to: 1. Describe the features and functions of a desktop operating system. 2. Outline the installation and configuration of a desktop operating system. 3. Implement client-side networking components. 4. Configure the desktop operating system to access local and network printers. General Education Outcomes: In addition, the following General Education outcomes are assessed during this course: GEL-1: Describe the historical events that influence contemporary culture. GEL-2: Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard American English.

5 CLASS SUCCESS Success in Class 1.This class requires you to write college-level essays. 2.All project assignment (essays) are to be submitted in APA Style format. 3.See the SampleAPA.pdf file posted in Doc Sharing. Use this to format your documents in APA Style. 4.Submit assignments as Word documents with your name and unit in the title (ex: SmithM-IT261-U1.docx) Each assignment has a Grading Rubric that outlines the point values. The rubric is a.pdf file. Review the rubric BEFORE you begin your project. I require references! Even if your textbook is your only reference, you must cite it in references. Review the guidelines for plagiarism and cite your sources!

6 CLASS CONTENT Textbook for Desktop Administration 1.The textbook for this course is: Microsoft Windows 7 In Depth By Robert Cowart and Brian Knittel 2.Thick, but a great reference! This book provides features, step-by-step instructions, tips, notes and cautions for Windows 7. 3.Note the units do not follow the sequence of the chapters in the textbook

7 CLASS CONTENT Screen Captures for Assignments 1.You are required to include screen captures to demonstrate your work. 2.There are free software packages, plus Windows 7 has the Snipping Tool. The use of Print Screen captures the ENTIRE desktop and makes large files. 3.Screen capture software allows you to drag over just the part of the screen you want to capture and then paste into Word. Example: ScreenHunter by WisdomSoft

8 CLASS CONTENT I have Windows 7 1.If you are using Windows 7 as your current operating system, you should still install a free version of Windows 7 in a virtual environment. 2.Download VirtualBox – instructions in Doc Sharing 3.Download Windows 7 from DreamSpark DreamSpark is a Microsoft program that gives students full versions of software. You will need a login for DreamSpark which you can get from the Kaplan Technology Center – instructions in Doc Sharing. 4.Install Windows 7 in your VirtualBox.

9 CLASS CONTENT I do not have Windows 7 1.If you are using Windows XP as your current operating system, you can use it as the host operating system and install a virtual environment. 2.Download VirtualBox – instructions in Doc Sharing 3.Download Windows 7 from DreamSpark 4.Install Windows 7 in your VirtualBox

10 CLASS CONTENT Virtual Environment for Windows 7 Several Options Virtual environments include VMWare, VirtualPC and VirtualBox. All are free. We give you instructions for VirtualBox because it enables you to install Windows and Linux operating systems Learning about virtual environments is a critical skill.

11 CLASS CONTENT Windows 7 is Free from DreamSpark You can download Windows 7 from the DreamSpark site (was MSDNAA). Windows 7 is a large file and takes a lot of time to download depending on your link.

12 UNIT I Unit 1 Reading READ Chapter 1 – Introducing Windows 7 in the Microsoft Windows 7 In Depth textbook. Also, review Doc Sharing for installation information. Decide on a virtual environment. Get DreamSpark login. Review Microsoft websites for Windows 7 which include resources for the OS http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/home

14 UNIT I Installation and Setup Improved Windows Easy Transfer and Migration Tools In Windows Vista, you could use either the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard, or the User State Migration Tool (aka USMT – now 4.0) to move user preferences and settings from older versions of Windows into Vista. In Windows 7, both of these tools are available and help transfer user environments from older Windows versions into Windows 7, including Vista and older Windows versions. However, neither tool moves applications over, while some applications that require logins, such as Outlook, still require user accounts to be re-created and passwords re-assigned.
