The purity of water The purity of water in the Czech Republic Hana Hodulíková, Hana Látová and Denisa Piačková

Approximately one third of flows remains excessive pollution 10% of the lengths of all streams are found water unpolluted or only slightly polluted The Vltava river

BLUE- the best water quality RED- the worst water quality

Water pollution in the Czech Republic Caused by: -Lowering oxygen content - occurrence of pollutants in water - thermal pollution The Bílina river – the most polluted river

The basic groups of harmful substances that pollute water: 1. Salt 2. Heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, copper, arsenic) -Industrial technological processes - sludge from sewage treatment plants - fertilizers - burning fossil fuels 3. acid rains

4. Organic substances (oil processing, coal, paints and varnishes,..) 5. Increased content of nutrients (chemical nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon,..) -> effect of reducing the oxygen content in water 6. Viruses and bacteria (get into the water from the waste water from households, agriculture,..)

Reported releases of pollution in Czech Republic in 2006 - amounts Name Amounts (kg/year) Chloridy 47 873 101 Organický uhlík3 795 190 Dusík3 093 150 Fosfor42 886 Fluoridy33 152 Zinek30 741 Halogenované organické sloučeniny29 870 Kyanidy3 064

Protection against pollution - Urban and industrial wastewater treatment plant - prevention, following good business practices and responsible approach to the environment - small streams are then significant strengthening their natural self-cleaning

wastewater treatment in Karviná

Drinking water in the Czech Republic Drinking water is obtained by adjusting the raw water. Raw water is extracted from underground in the Czech Republic (45% –55 %) or surface water (45% -55 %). water sources: - Water sourec Želivka - Water source Káraný - Water source Podolí - Water source Čerlinka - Water source Litá
