5  There are 3 basic skills  Job related or (specific) – certain job skills needed to perform a job task that the employer needs you to do. (typing skills, computer knowledge, specific machinery, medical terminology).

6  Skills used in many occupations and allow people to transfer them to other fields. (manage money, good writing skills, good with people, good at meeting deadlines, having patience, trusting, good at directing people.

7  Adaptive skills can be defined as:  Personality traits  Personal characteristics  They help a person adapt to or get along in new or uneasy situations.  Some examples could be taking responsibility and pride in doing a good job, self motivation, enthusiasm, leadership, creativity, being flexible, learning quickly.

14 1. Establish challenging, yet realistic goals. 2. Write your goals down on paper. 3. Make your goals public by telling someone. 4. Evaluate progress towards your goal and establish new goal based on current progress.

15 1. Earn Money – NEEDS - food, shelter, clothing WANTS - add comfort and enjoyment to our lives. 2. Social Satisfaction – For a chance to be with others and make friends. 3. Positive Feelings –To achieve a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. 4. Prestige - For a sense of high status or admiration from society. 5. Personal Development- For an opportunity to learn new things and grow. 6. Contributions to Health- Working can contribute to positive mental and physical health. 7. Self-Expression- Working provides a venue for people to express their talents and abilities.

16  Work – an activity directed towards a purpose. (can be paid or unpaid)  Occupation – name given to a group of similar tasks that a person does for pay. (Teacher)  Job – a paid position at a specific place or setting (teaching is an occupation and a teacher can work at Simle, BHS, CHS etc.)

17 1. Punctuality – Making it to work on time. 2. Dependability – Being reliable & trustworthy. 3. Cooperation – Working well with others.

18 1. Entry-Level – A beginning job that does not require any previous job knowledge or experience.  Most are held by young people.  Most are stepping stone to a better job. 2. Stable Job – A job that is considered more permanent and may last for several years.  All of the jobs you hold during your lifetime formulates what is called your WORK HISTORY.

19  Most do not look very hard (lazy, won’t wash dishes etc.)  Lack the necessary employability skills.  May have a poor personal appearance. Unemployment Statistics At any given moment there are 20-30 million Americans suffering from unemployment. The average length of unemployment lasts about 20 weeks (5 months)
