Motivate the study of number relationships

Is a branch of mathematics, mainly concerned with the integers, that has been a topic of study for centuries.

 Is a prime source to show that numbers can be fascinating.  Looks at the mathematical properties of numbers.  Opens the doors to many mathematical conjectures.  Provides an avenue to extend and practice mathematical skills.  Offers a source of recreation.

 Even number- Any integer that can be divided exactly by 2. The last digit will be 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 Example: -24, 0, 6 and 38 are all even numbers If it is not an even number, it is called an odd number.  Odd Number- Any integer that CANNOT be divided exactly by 2. The last digit will be 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 Example: -3, 1, 7 and 35 are all odd numbers If it is not an odd number, it is called an even number.

Factor- a factor of a number divides that number with no remainder. Multiple- a multiple of a number is the product of that number and any other whole number. Ex. 36 is a multiple of 4 since 4x9=36. Prime Number- is a whole number greater than 1 that has exactly two factors, 1 and itself. Composite Number- is any number with more than two factors.

A Prime Number can be divided evenly only by 1 or itself. And it must be greater than 1. Example: 7 can be divided evenly only by 1 or 7, so it is a prime number. If it is not a Prime Number it is called a Composite Number Example: 6 can be divided evenly by 1, 2, 3 and 6 so it is a composite number.

A Composite Number can be divided evenly by numbers other than 1 or itself. Example: 9 can be divided evenly by 1, 3 and 9, so 9 is a composite number. If it is not a Composite Number it is a Prime Number.

 The most commonly used method in elementary school to find the prime factorization of a number is the factor tree.

 Divisible By  "Divisible By" means "when you divide one number by another the result is a whole number"  Examples:  14 is divisible by 7, because 14÷7 = 2 exactly  But 15 is not divisible by 7, because 15÷7 = 2 1 / 7 (i.e., the result is not a whole number)

 Pascal’s Triangle  Pythagorean Triples  Fibonacci Sequence
