SWITZERLAND The Swiss education system

2 The country Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a federal parliamentary republic consisting of 26 cantons, with Bern as the seat of the federal authorities, the so-called Bundesstad

4 Duration of the levels of education:
All cantons provide one to two years of free pre-school education ("kindergarten", "école enfantine"); the canton of Ticino offers three years (scuola dell'infanzia). In most cantons attendance of two years of pre-school will become mandatory over the next few years; this is already the case in fourteen cantons.

5 Languages:  : The language of instruction is German, French, Italian or Romansh, depending on the language region, though Romansh-language communities are a special case (more information). Traditionally, language learning has an important role in Switzerland. During their compulsory schooling in most cantons today students learn at least two other languages. These are one of the other languages spoken in Switzerland, and English.

6 In Switzerland, education is the responsibility of the government from entering pre-school  to the tertiary level (universities and higher vocational education and training). Responsibility for education lies primarily with the 26 cantons

7 Since Switzerland has no natural resources, education and knowledge have become very important resources. Therefore Switzerland claims to have one of the world's best education systems. Because the cantons are responsible for educational services (kindergarten, schools, universities

8 ), education may vary significantly between cantons
), education may vary significantly between cantons. For example, some cantons start to teach the first foreign language at fourth grade, while others start at seventh grade. This can turn moving with children between cantons into a nightmare.

9 In the multilingual and federally structured Switzerland the 26 cantons have the primary responsibility for education. Compulsory education is largely rooted in the cantons and local municipalities. 插入您所在国家/地区的地图。

15 PRIMARY EDUCATION Education is free in theory up to age 15 in Tanzania, although unfortunately poorer parents are unable to afford uniforms, school materials and examination fees, and so their children continue to be deprived.

16 The primary period lasts for 7 years, where after all children must pass the same examination for a primary school certificate.

17 MIDDLE EDUCATION Four years of junior secondary schooling follow.
Nominal annual tuition fees are levied, as are a wide variety of other charges too, ranging from watchman fees through to a furniture levy.

18 The medium of education is English, although Swahili language classes are also followed. There are examinations at the end of forms 2 and 4.

19 SECONDARY EDUCATION Secondary education in Tanzania follows the Cambridge model of ordinary and advanced levels, both of which require 2 years of study followed by an examination.

20 The advanced level is available only at certain boarding schools, which effectively often means the end of the road for many a poor child because of cost.

21 VOCATIONAL EDUCATION A vocational education and training act is in place that finds expression through the vocational education and training authority.

22 Tertiary education takes a minimum of 3
years, at a wide variety of institutions under control of the ministry of higher education.

23 Of these the oldest is the
University of Dar es Salaam, which was established in 1970 following the dissolution of the University of East Africa into 3 national institutions.

24 There are 5 campuses in the city and
10 faculties. These include mechanical & chemical engineering, electrical & computer systems engineering, civil engineering & the built environment, humanities & social sciences, and education.
