1 Having a smooth transition for businesses and individuals to keep current insurance policies while adopting ObamaCare called for exemption from some of Affordable Care Act rules and protections. Barr (2013).

2 * Following an uproar from citizens whose health insurance policies were cancelled, there was the need to exempt the insurance policy takers some of ACA’s rules and regulations to allow smooth transition to ObamaCare. * Individuals getting insurance policies from their employers are in a godfathered plan by default implying that they are protected from some of the laws as per Barr(2013). * Godfathered plan must follow some of the rules other plans do under ACA.

3 * Godfathered plans are exempted from many alterations stated by the Affordable Care Act. Policies and plans may however lose the godfathered status once they implement critical changes to lower benefits or increase costs to consumers. A health insurance plan is mandated to disclose its plan materials to consider itself godfathered and must advise its consumers on how to get in touch with U.S Department of Labor or U.S Department of Health and Human Services for answers.
