Fleet Safety: Managing technology integration, training, and legal risks Teresa Prisbrey, Director of Marketing tprisbrey@preco.com 208.323.7114 tprisbrey@preco.com

Agenda About us Lessons from the field Testing Plan: Start Smart, it’s the law ok, it isn’t but should be Training plan And we’re done… well, not really. Will this ever end?

Who we are Established 1947 rebuilding batteries, starters, generators Introduced the electronic back-up alarm in 1967 Caterpillar's first certified electronics supplier in 1975 Opened a dedicated facility to serve the off road market in 1987 Full line (alarms and lights) supplier in 1991 Entered the object detection business in 1998 Entered the wireless job tracking business in 2001 Dedicated active safety business in 2008

A (very little) about our product Really, just a little background: Collision warning system Available OEM or retrofit Original development, current features, and future features come from our customers problems

Lessons learned Customers make the best teachers The good: Backup alarm: a Customer Open cab: a Customer The bad: Names are changed to protect the innocent Testing: the wrong way Murphy’s law and the law

I AM NOT AN ATTORNEY An attorney told me I had to say that

More word(s) from the attorney If there is an accident where your driver was at fault, you will pay. Period. Medical Repairs Lost compensation “Make them Whole” But were you negligent? If so, you will pay

No such thing as Fail Proof When it comes to the law, sometimes one lawyer just spins a better tale. Twinkie defense McDonalds Give your attorneys the tools they need to defend your company.

Negligence = Punitive Damages Island Fever: No negligence

Now, this was negligence Dominos: Dominos guarantees 30 minute delivery In August of 2012, a Dominos delivery driver using his personal vehicle – racing to make the deadline – hit a passenger vehicle. One passenger died and the other had a permanent brain injury.

Do you see where this is going? Not where you might think.

AND NOW A WORD FROM THE AUDIENCE Questions so far? Yes, I needed this remind me to ask.

Let’s build! Create a testing plan: 1. What are the goals of the test. What are you trying to prevent / fix / solve 2. When will it start and end. 3. Machines / Trucks to be involved 4. Who will be involved 5. How will you train 6. How will you get input from the drivers and maintenance crew 7. How will you share this information with the team 8. What did you decide and why

AND NOW A WORD FROM THE AUDIENCE Other suggestions from your experiences?

The Roll-out Plan Determine where to start Highest risk region Highest risk machine Smallest site first Chose the order for the rest of the machines, regions, etc.

The Roll-out Plan Include anticipated timeframes Vague enough to give yourself wiggle room Strong enough to look serious Example: We will have site X installed and trained by end of Q4 Sometimes it’s good to show the soft and hard costs per install

The Roll-out Plan Training / Communication How will you communicate to the company that you’re embracing a new technology? How will you train your installers and maintenance crew. Don’t get me started on a bad install When, where, and how will you train your existing drivers on the new technology Surprise, even collision warning requires training What are your requirements if it is disabled? Keep working, return to shop, etc. How will you train new employees on the technology.

Roll-out Plan Stuff Happens, plans get delayed Update the roll-out plan to explain why Update with new timeframes

AND NOW A WORD FROM THE AUDIENCE This slide might come up again… any suggestions to share with the group?

A LIVING Document Things happen: Recessions hit You have a slow quarter Something urgent comes up where the plan was deferred for a month or quarter You found another way Keep it simple and concise DOCUMENT any changes

The End Result Thorough testing Clean installation Driver buy-in from the beginning Documentation that you are a responsible entity Due diligence (attorney word) No guarantees (the attorney is proud)
