27/08/2015 Ionic bonding This is where a metal bonds with a non-metal. The metal atom donates one or more electrons to the non-metal. For example, consider sodium and chlorine: Sodium has 1 electron on its outer shell and chlorine has 7, so if sodium gives its electron to chlorine they both have a full outer shell and are ions. A positively charged sodium ion A negatively charged chloride ion Ionic bonds form strong forces of attraction between different ions due to their oppositecharges, causing GIANT IONIC LATTICES to form (e.g sodium chloride) with high melting and boiling points: x x NaCl NaCl -+
