Social Support (Activities as a way to combat isolation – and the funding for them). Or how do I Have fun, meet people, get out and do a bit of exercise.

Why do we organise activities Activities for Blind people were traditionally a bit “ gentle”. Metro was set up by some VI people in 1973, who wanted a challenge. Some sports need to be adapted especially ball sports. Many other sports can be done, but difficult to compete with sighted people. Team sports require organisation – demographics mean that there may be considerable travelling involved. Tournaments or competitions allow VI people to compete on equal terms with other VI people

Participating Organised “ Taster” sessions Events for Juniors sessions with experienced and qualified Coaching staff. Finding Accessible venues. General friendliness and encouragement.

Keep it interesting Team sports Competing with others Opportunities for Socialising. Encouraging people to try new things.

Don’t do things on your own. Metro tennis tournament at National Tennis Centre Roehampton – c/o the Tennis Foundation. Cricket development days at Lords ( England & Wales Cricket Board). FA qualified football coaches – Tottenham Hotspurs FC. Local authorities, National & regional VI organisations, Sporting Bodies, may all help.

Funding Only one employee ( fundraiser ). Advertising space, donations, Trust funding and event sponsorship. ( For ££££££) Volunteer time, donations of venues, coaching staff, equipment etc….are equally valuable Members contribute towards their own costs and make own arrangements to get to venues etc… We are hoping that our new website will improve ability to fund raise.

Metro is interested in supporting groups or individuals to participate in sports activities. Contact the Chair of Trustees or come along to one of our organised sessions and get a feel for what we do. All details are on the website. www.metroblindsport.org Individual membership is £5.00 a year ( April to April ). We welcome all VI people and would be supportive to help you join in sports activities.
