5 Making Your Course Selections  LISTEN to your counselors today  READ registration handbook  ASK questions  TALK with your teachers and other students ( Especially core junior teachers & current seniors )  THINK about your plans after high school and how your course selection can help prepare you

6 How do I attain senior status?  Must earn 15 credits by the start of the 2014-15 school year  Know how many credits have you attained after 5 semesters-review your transcript  Pass your classes second semester-earn additional credits  Consider summer school opportunities to make up credit (credit recovery will be pass/fail)  Graduation = 21 credits minimum

7 What information is on my high school transcript?  Identification information  Course history for each grade in high school  Final grades  Mid year grades  Grade Point Averages  Weighted (QPA) & Unweighted (GPA)  Class Rank  Credits Earned  Standardized Test Scores  EOG from 8 th grade  Other EOC scores  Attendance for each grade in high school

12 WS/FCS Course Guiding Principles  Students will be assigned to the most rigorous and challenging courses based on previous test scores and grades  Students and Parents should discuss course options with current teachers  Students and Parents choose all courses and course levels  Course Assignments will be written on your registration card  Course Choice Request form will be attached to your registration card

13 Why is there a deadline for changing course requests? May I change my course requests after the deadline (April 25 th )? ONLY IF: 1.You need other course to meet graduation requirements 2.You fail a prerequisite course 3.You complete a course in summer school 4.You have selected a course that will not be offered due to low enrollment

19 Should I take a third, fourth, or fifth level of a foreign language?  Yes, if you are prepared to be successful at the next level  Yes, if you want to be more competitive in the college admissions process  Yes, if you want to be better prepared for college and/or earn college credit in h.s.  Level 3 and higher are HONORS courses and they do have greater expectations

20 Future Ready Electives  Students must complete 4 elective credits to satisfy WS/FCS graduation requirements.  2 electives must be any combination of Career Technical Education, Arts Education or Second Language and  2 additional electives (from CTE, JROTC, Arts Education or any other subject area)

35 When can I access bus transportation to and from the Career Center?  The transportation schedule for the Career Center may change from year to year. Students who need bus transportation typically need to take 3 class periods at the Career Center. We will work with you as best we can but you need to have a RELIABLE plan in place prior to the start of the school year.  Talk with your parent about what transportation needs you may have next year and share them with your counselor during your registration meeting.

36 Where is the Career Center? 910 Highland Court Winston Salem, NC 27101  Students who drive themselves will be required to have a Career Center parking permit. More details to come.

37 Besides AP, which courses can earn college credit?  Dual Enrollment courses  Forsyth Tech  Salem College  Wake Forest  Winston-Salem State University Students who wish to pursue Dual Enrollment courses need to speak with their counselor prior to enrolling in order to receive written approval. Students are responsible for tuition charges, books, and transportation for Dual Enrollment courses.

38 North Carolina Virtual Public School  Online courses at school and/or home  When courses are not available locally  When courses conflict prohibits course enrollment  When illness or injury causes student to be homebound  Academically motivated learners skilled in the areas of responsibility and self-regulation  Strong reading and writing skills  Basic computer skills necessary  Course enrollment must be approved by principal  Enrollment does not shorten school day
