TRONA CARE NEWS September 30, 2009 | Volume 1, Issue 3 Miracle in the Desert Complete In a recent press release from Dave Garrison, he states, On June 27, 2009 thru June 29, 2009 several volunteers of the community of Trona banned together to accomplish what others have only wished for. Battling temperatures reaching 110 degrees, these hardy volunteers laid approximately 6000 feet of water line. The piping was created to automatically water the 15 trees already in place along the bike path between Athol Street and Marshall Street, as well as allow for an additional 40 trees to be planted. The project, designed to add much needed shade along the path as well as beautify the community, was spearheaded by Trona Care. Equipment to accomplish this daunting task was donated by local business. The supplies were donated by Trona Industrial Supply and all labor was volunteer. We would like to thank all the support of the volunteers as well as the following businesses;  Searles Valley Minerals  Larry A. Garcia Landscaping  Trona Industrial Supply  ValleyWide Construction Services  Barker Construction With the water line in place we hope to add additional trees as well as possibly creating a desert landscape viewing area for visitors and tourist as additional funding is acquired. Starting October 3 rd thru the 10 th Station 127 will be hosting events to education and help our community to prevent fires. Station 127 will be bringing Sparky’s Prevention Trailer to Trona Elementary School on October 9 th. Following an assemble at 8:00am elementary student will be given an educational tour of the trailer and prevention information will be available to take home. “It is important to education children of all ages,” say Fire Captain Doris Vanhorn. Open House will be announced at a later date. Please bring your trash and tires to the designated containers at one of the locations listed below. This program is limited to the residents of the unincorporated County area. We cannot accept commercial or industrial waste from businesses. If you have oversized or hard to handle loads, you may be diverted directly to the landfill. Please remember to safely secure and properly cover your loads prior to traveling to the event. Trona Care News Page 3 Halloween Kids Safety When most parents think of Halloween safety, they typically just remind their kids to not eat unwrapped treats, But since many injuries are actually from falls and kids who get hit by cars, your plans for Halloween safety have to go way beyond Halloween candy if you want to really keep your kids safe. Most plans for a safe Halloween should start well before Halloween and include getting a safe costume that is: flame resistant. Since candlelit pumpkins are popular on Halloween. Easily visible at night, which might include some kind of reflective tape or other bright and reflective materials incorporated into the costume. Well fitted to your child and not too long so that it can make your child trip and fall, a leading cause of injuries on Halloween. Masks, hats, and other accessories, such as a sword, should also be appropriate to your child's size. In addition, to help make sure your child can see and can be seen, you might incorporate a flashlight into your child's costume. Once you have your child's costume, another important to make about share you children are supervised. When trick-or-treating following a few simple rule can help to make sure your kids are safe: Planning a safe area to trick-or-treat Staying in the group Walking to each house together Only going to house that has a light on Walking on the sidewalk and not cutting across lawns, alleys, etc. Don’t enter a house without supervision Inspect your child's treats to make sure they haven't been tampered with. Overall, make a Halloween a spooky and fun night. Just a reminder, COPs will be driving around make sure our children are safe, hand out glow sticks. So when you see them give a friendly wave because they are here to help. As summer end and it get colder, the sniffles and sneezes and perhaps a sore throat and annoying cough, the common cold catches all of us from time to time. With kids getting as many as eight colds per year or more, it is getting harder and harder to prevent The Common Cold. But knowing what signs and symptoms to look for, and how to protect yourself is the key to prevention. The first symptoms of a cold are often a tickle in the throat, a runny or stuffy nose, and sneezing. Kids with colds may also have a sore throat, cough, headache, mild fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and loss of appetite. Nasal discharge may change from watery to thick yellow or green. Colds are most contagious during the first 2 to 4 days after symptoms appear, and may be contagious for up to 3 weeks. Your can catch a cold from person-to-person contact or by breathing in virus particles spread through the air by sneezing or coughing. To help prevent colds: try to steer clear of anyone who has a cold. Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently Cover their noses and mouths when coughing or sneezing (have them sneeze or cough into a shirtsleeve, though, not your hands — this helps prevent the spread of germs) Don’t eat or drink after someone that has a Most colds clear up within 1 week, but some last for as long as 2 weeks. Like most virus infections, colds just have to run their course. The best plan is to getting plenty of rest, avoiding vigorous activity, and drinking lots of fluids — juice, water, and non-caffeinated beverages, which my increase t risk of dehydration— all may help you feel better while on the mend.
