1  Why do companies have a recruitment process? What could happen if they did not use some or all of the steps of the recruiting process?

2 Techniques Used to Prepare for a Job Search

3  We have taken quizzes about skills and abilities  You usually have a good idea what types of jobs you may like … family, friends, media, etc.  How do you know which job will be right for you?

4  A good way to choose which job you would like to work at would be:  Asking friends and family  Speaking with guidance counselors  Taking a co-op to see if you will like a certain job  Taking online quizzes  Researching about a job or company to see if you will be a good fit  Which job will be prepare you for the future?  Last of all…. Use common sense!

5  Now that you know which job you would like to apply for, you need to apply for it.  What are our options?  Job application forms  Online  In person  Resume and Cover Letter  Go speak with the manager/boss

7  So you applied for your dream job… or some random job that you need so you can make some money  What is the next step?  Well if you get a call to come in for an interview, you need to be prepared  What are some things you can do to be prepared for a job interview?

8  There are a few things to remember when you go in for a job interview: 1)Make a Positive First Impression 2)Answer Questions Effectively 3)Asking Questions of the Employer

9 Making a Positive First Impression  Employers will determine their initial impression of you in a few seconds  You want to do as much as you can to ensure their first thoughts are favourable  Arrive early for interview  Dress appropriately for the job  Do not chew gum/mints  Introduce yourself  Offer a firm handshake  Be aware of your voice tone and body language

10  When you get a job interview, you will be asked a variety of questions  Sometimes you will know the questions in advance, but most times you will just be asked in the interview  As you prepare for your interview, there are things you can do to ensure you will answer all questions confidently, and effectively  You should:  Make sure you do talk too much  Maintain eye contact  Ensure your answers relate to the job  Do not stray off topic  Ask for clarification if needed

11  Some common interview questions that may be asked of you are:  Tell me about yourself.  What is your greatest strengths?  What skills do you possess that will help you in this job?  What is a weakness that you have?  Why should we hire you?  What did you like/dislike about your last job?  Why do you want to work here?  Do you have any questions?

12  The interviewer may ask you additional questions that are specific to that job  Example: Job Interview at Future Shop  What do you know about our company?  Do you ever shop here? What types of products have you bought?  Which department would you like to work in and why?  What types of technology do you use? (TV, Computer, Video Games, etc.)  What makes a good salesperson?  What would you do if a co-worker was caught stealing?

13  There are some questions that an employer is legally not allowed to ask an interviewer  If you are asked an illegal question you can:  You can answer, but realize the response is not job related  You can refuse to answer, but do so in an appropriate manner  Answer with a response that would apply to the job

Arrest RecordHave you ever been arrested?Have you ever been convicted of a criminal offense for which you have not received a pardon? 15  You are to create and answer some possible interview questions  You are to create 10 general questions that an employer may ask you (they do not have to be for a specific job, we will do that later)  Answer all 10 questions just as you would in an interview
