2 Protect Your Computer from Viruses and Other Threats! 1. Use antivirus software. 2. Run Windows updates. 3. Use a strong password. 4. Only install reputable software or Georgetown University licensed software. 5. Check the source of your e-mail; be careful with e-mail attachments. 6. Avoid disreputable Web sites. 7. Pay attention to UIS security alerts. 8. Lock the screen or log out when away; shut down the machine when not in use. 9. Don’t use an administrative account for daily work.

3 S trong P asswords … are at least eight characters in length. contain uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, punctuation, and symbols (!@#$%^&*()_+|~-=\`{}[]:";'<>?,./ ). are not dictionary or foreign language words, slang, jargon, or proper names. are not associated with Georgetown University, such as hoyas, jesuit, or healy. avoid common misspellings and substitutions (replacing “e” with “3” or “i” with “1”) are not based on your name, relative’s name, userID, or other personal information. 6 Hackers can get into your computer, or the network it’s attached to, by using a password- cracking program to guess your password and get into your systems and accounts. Protect your computer by using a strong password composed of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, punctuation, and symbols. http://security.georgetown.edu/ passwords.html

7 “Security holes” are flaws in an operating system that allow Internet worms to get into your computer Keep worms from infecting your computer by setting up automatic Windows Updates.
