September 2nd Learning Target: You will be able to graph relations and determine if they are functions are not. You will also be able to identify the domains and ranges of functions. Birthdays : Saturday – Jose Tavera (4 th ) You Need: Color paper from the front table. “What Do I Know?” slip from the front table. To complete the following problem on a scratch sheet of paper: 4y – 6 = 2y + 8 Open House Tonight 6pm to 8pm

1. What is the range of an ordered pair? 2. Identify the domain of the following relation: {(2, 3), (-1, 4), (5, 2), (6, -8), (-3, 5)} 3. Is the following graph a function? What Do I Know?

Relations and Functions relation – a set of pairs of input (x-values) and output (y-values), ordered pairs. domain – the set of all inputs (x-values) of the ordered pair. {(3, 4), (-5, 6), (2, 7), (8, -3), (5, 1)} Which values are the x-values?Which values are the y-values? What is the domain of the above relation? {-5, 2, 3, 5, 8} range – the set of all outputs (y-values) of the ordered pair. What is the range of the above relation? {-3, 1, 4, 6, 7}

Relations and Functions mapping diagram – a way to show a relation by linking elements of the domain with corresponding elements of the range. 3 -5 -2 6 -10 2 Domain Range {(-1, -2), (3, 6), (-5, -10), (3, 2)}

Relations and Functions function – a relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element in the range. {(3, 4), (-5, 6), (2, 7), (8, -3), (5, 1)} Is this relation a function? DomainRange 3 -5 2 8 5 4 6 7 -3 1 Yes, this is a function.

Relations and Functions DomainRange 385385 4 -3 1 Determine whether the relation is a function. 2 -3 6 -4 5 385385 Domain Range No, this is not a function.Yes, this is a function.

Relations and Functions discrete function – a function that, as a graph, has a collection of isolated points. continuous function – a function that, as a graph, is an uninterrupted line or curve.

vertical-line test – a test to determine if a graph is a function. If a vertical line passes through at least two points on the graph, then one element of the domain is paired with more than one element of the range and is, therefore, not a function. Relations and Functions No, this is not a function. Yes, this is a function.

Your Assignment for Today Grab a textbook from the bookshelf. Page 61 #1-21 odd. Please work with someone else. Turn in your “What Do I Know?” slips before you leave class today.
