Tom bought a pair of glasses for $210 and a case for $18. His insurance plan gave him a 20% discount. If tax is 5%, how much did he pay? Cost: 210 + 18 = $228 Discount: $228 0.20 = $45.60 Discount Cost: $228 – $45.60 = $182.40 Tax: $182.40 0.05 = $9.12 Final Cost: $182.40 + $9.12 = $191.52

The equations we will be graphing will have two variables, x & y. 2x + 3y = 12 A solution to the equation is any ordered pair (x, y) that makes the equation true. The ordered pair (3, 2) is a solution since 2(3) + 3(2) = 12.
5
When we plot these ordered pairs on a graph, we would be graphing a line. What ordered pair would satisfy the equation y = 5x – 3? We would use a table of values to list these ordered pairs. 0 1 2 3 4 -3 2 6 12 17
6
y = 2x – 1 0 1 2 3 4 1 3 5 7 There are an infinite number of points that would satisfy this equation. When you plot these points on a coordinate plane, you create a graph of the equation. Every point on the line is a possible solution to the equation!
7
y = 2x – 1 0 1 2 3 4 1 3 5 7..... This is the graph of the equation y = 2x – 1.
8
y = -3x + 2 0 2 2 1 -4... We only need three points to graph a line.
9
2x + y = 5 0 3 2 5 1 1... 1.Find three points. 2. Plot points. 3.Draw line.
10
Horizontal Lines Equations like y = 3, y = -6, y = 8, etc. result in horizontal lines. Vertical Lines Equations like x = 4, x = -4, x = 12, etc. result in vertical lines.
11
y = 4 4 2 1 4... y is always 4, so x can be any number! 4 0
12
x = -4 3 -4 1... x is always -4, so y can be any number! 6 -4
